I first stumbled upon Whole30 after two different friends--from two different friend circles--discussed this 30 day "plan" they were completing. Edit (4/28): I would like to address the "basic recipes" complaints. I've cooked my whole life and even won cooking contests. Over the weekend I followed the recipes for four "basic" items: perfect poached eggs, perfect burgers, perfect seared chicken breast, and perfect whole roasted chicken. All four turned out great! The burgers were way better than my usual ones, and the seared chicken breast was ridiculously delicious...so good that I'll cook it weekly! Looking forward to cooking my way through the rest of the book.

I always have my eye out for authors who are interested in bringing together the scientific and the spiritual. If we assume (as I do) that there is reality to the existence of spiritual realms, beings, and principles, and that there is validity to the process of scientific inquiry, then it's obvious that the two must eventually meet. And this is in spite of the mistrust and downright animosity that partisans on both sides of this divide often show toward each other.

This book is a very welcome step toward the integration of these two perspectives on "reality." To say this book is amazing would be an understatement.. Tommy has literally spelled out, in black and white, so simply yet eloquently, the most powerful truths that he brought back from heaven. As I finished reading this book, and closed the cover, I could not stop crying. I wasn't crying because I was sad, I was crying from a sense of elation. Finally, there it was in writing, you can 'DO THIS RIGHT" and make the world a better place to live in. I can only echo the other reviewers - this book is a gem. I even like it a little better than her earlier work, Energy Medicine, because it is more concise. Eden also cites books written recently with scientific backup for what subtle energies are and how they function. That helps me because although I know this stuff works, I also have the heart of a skeptic. As someone who is very dissatisfied with the way medicine is practiced here in the U.S. and who has come away from doctor's appointments feeling like something is missing, I believe this type of energy medicine is the wave of the future and is an extremely useful addition to, but not a substitute for, conventional medicine. It's too bad that so few conventionally trained doctors have jumped on the bandwagon.

Better than I Could Have Imagined
If someone had asked me if it were possible for Donna Eden to top "Energy
Medicine," I would have said "No way." And would I ever have been wrong.

She has provided the tools, in this book, for everyone to do Pilates (or eat forever) by utilizing the, easy to read and follow guidelines. The colorful pictures speak for themselves. Being a long time Pilates Instructor the book is exciting and fresh to me. Brooke has a way with words!Brooke teaches us to fish for ourselves in this book. Love this book!

The BEST resource for Pilates practitioners of ALL levels!
As a long time Pilates instructor, I have found it difficult when students ask for a book reference, to point them to a good, reputable source for classic Pilates. The only book I have ever recommended up until now is The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. This new book, also written by Brooke Siler, is amazing. It includes information for all levels of practitioners, in an easy-to-use format with great pictures! I love everything about this book, and have recommended it both to my students and to anyone looking to start, or further deepen, their own Pilates practice.

Excellent, detailed, well-organized
This book is excellent! I also own Brooke Siler's other book, "The Pilates Body", which was my original introduction to Pilates years ago. I had thought that was the only book I'd ever need about Pilates, but I was wrong! This new book goes above & beyond. The first few chapters are for people new to Pilates -- she gives a detailed background about founder Joseph Pilates, her own training, and answers common questions about it and explains how it gets you fit.
The next section is "Pilates for your Plate," which teaches you how to eat healthy. Then is a chapter on technique -- do not skip this chapter! It explains how to do the exercises with proper form. She also includes several modifications, such as for low-back problems or knee problems.

The next section, "Pilates on the Mat: The Series," is divided up into 4 levels, of increasing advancement. So you can start with the level you feel most comfortable. The way the exercises are illustrated is...

I just got this book today, so I haven't had a chance to go through every single page, but I am so impressed! It includes:

* a brief overview of the history of yoga
* language of yoga
* benefits of yoga
* answers to common questions on yoga
* touches on some of the deeper spiritual aspects of yoga (enough to give a taste of it, but not to overwhelm)
* how yoga keeps you fit
* conscious eating and even includes a sample meal plan with a few recipes!

That's just the first 40 pages :) THEN the book goes onto:

* a thorough break down of every essential yoga pose with beautiful photographic spreads that have anatomical cues

Critical Review From an Experienced Instructor
Summary:

This book is dangerous. I’m honestly concerned that someone will hurt themselves with this book.
This book would get torn apart in a peer review, like what I'm doing. The author is a contributing magazine editor. That alone raises some flags on its purpose and credibility.
This book should not have been written. It adds nothing to the subject of yoga and is intended purely to reap profit from buyers. Practitioners are better off not using it.

Issues with this Book:

I teach yoga and a student brought a copy to class to ask my opinion. I spent some time with it and discovered that Kathryn Budig has created a book very much like herself--it's practical, informative, and downright entertaining. She appreciates the fact that many woman have incorporated yoga into their lives for all kinds of practical reasons, but mainly because it makes them feel good. She provides all of the basic information a beginner or an experienced yogini might need about the many questions that can arise during your practice, and has also shown how to use some of the various poses as a remedy for many of the common challanges we face in our daily lives. If you're interested, she has covered pretty much the full gamut of yoga topics (breathing techniques, dealing with injuries, meditation, "I'm not flexible", etc.) and you can pick and choose to read about those that pique your curiosity. The photography is stunning, and the photos are of real people who have developed...

Review :
Adequate book but too complicated
This book gives a very nice overview of PCOS and a concise description of the syndrome. However, the diet plan that she lays out is quite complicated. It involves EXTENSIVE counting of carbs and basically, relies on the glycemic index to determine what and when to eat. For the most part, it is correct but it was too much for me to follow, while trying to cook for a family. Basically, I took control of my PCOS by:

1. Cutting out grains and refined starches (sugar, breads, pastas)
2. Cutting out root veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions)
3. Increasing protein
4. Increasing water.

That's it. That's all there is to it. I even allow myself one small helping of "Carb laden" food a day and have steadily lost weight and increased my fertility.

Seven pound weight loss in just over a week!
I was first diagnosed with PCOS nearly 18 years ago. After feeling as if the medical community completely ignored the condition, I gave up trying to halt the dangerous effects of my diagnosis and simply watched my hair fall out, my weight increase, etc. I've been on medications to counter the effects for over ten years and saw little improvement in my symptoms. Very thorough and informative. From following the meal plan laid out in the book I have already lost 10lbs. in not even a week! This isn't just a "diet" book although it says on the cover. It helped me understand the syndrome. I have read two other very well written books about PCOS and this is right up there with them if not better. The author provides info on studies that are very recent about PCOS. I feel more comfortable about my condition. This book helped me feel empowered with the proper info and tools to tackle this condition. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has PCOS.

A must-read for the Lupus community
I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.

But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.

However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important...

I thought this was so well done. Even with minor mistakes, able to present the information in an orderly fashion. I loved the explanations and concise presentation. Passed my CNM boards for the first time, and besides a robust education, I contribute this review book to my success. Going to sit for the NCC bards in a few months and will go back to this book for a refresher! Whenever their was a topic I was unsure of, I made sure to go back to my supporting text. Great self study resource, even down to the opening chapter. Well done!

An Amazing Workout Plan For Women
I have started this plan and was super sore after my first workout, and I do strength training on a regular basis as it is! So far I think this is an amazing plan. I love the way she really customizes everything for the woman's body. Trust me, she doesn't dumb it down for women, instead she customizes it for our bodies which are different from men's.
The reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would be nice to be able to submit questions to Holly regarding the plan. For instance, my gym doesn't have the prone position leg curl machine, just the seated leg curl machine, so it would be nice to be able to ask if there would be any modifications for that machine. Also, There are a couple of exercises where I question where she placed the "pause," after the "easy" instead of after the "hard." I tried to access the videos at both Holly's website and the Women's Health website and couldn't find them. Otherwise, I think this is an amazing plan and...

I found out about this book through a raw blog. A guy described his battle with candidiasis. I didn't realize that guys could get it and I never realized that candidiasis manifested itself in a spectrum of ways that I suffered from. I purchased this book and spend about 2 weeks reading, studying, and highlighting the book. I started the diet last Monday and I have to admit that the book has become my bible just because it's been a huge change for me that I continually have to refer back to the book. I photocopied a couple pages of the book to carry around with me and use as a reference when I'm out and I have to figure out what I can eat.

It seems that in most cases that nonfiction authors are motivated by one of two things when creating their works. Some feel that they have some sort of information that needs sharing, and use books as a way to get their word out. These authors have a true passion for their topic, which clearly shows when reading their books. Others are driven purely by profit. Sadly, it seems that the latter is true of Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet. Though this book does cover an important topic, it lacks substance and fails to deliver. However, it may be a good source for someone used to only mainstream health books and wanting a simple primer on the subject.
While the book is easy to read, it seems to offer no new information that is not readily available in other books or on the internet. Gates seems to favor certain foods and products, such as coconut water kefir, yet fails to thoroughly justify her preference for them, and supports her claims with little scientific research. The book is broken down into chapters dedicated to body parts: Chest, Back, Shoulders, Arms, Quadriceps & Calves, Glutes & Hamstrings, Core, as well as chapters for Total Body and Warmup Exercises. There is also a chapter on how to put various exercises together for specific-goal workouts (e.g. "The Get Your Body Back Workout", "The Skinny Jeans Workout", "The Bikini-Ready Workout", "The Best Sports Workout", "The Best Three-Exercise Workouts"). cannot read charts in kindle and cannot return
i purchased this item for kindle and much of it is unreadable because it is in charts that you cannot read and cannot change the size of (i have 20/20 vision) Also i just tried to return it in order to buy the print copy and not be out the 14 dollars but it turns out that you cannot return digital content on amazon. Its only 14 dollars but i am really bummed i cant use the book because i cant see any of the recommended exercises---DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK especially if it is a kindle program on your phone

Definitely "big" but a little misleading...
I bought this book as I work for group exercise at my campus rec center; I was hoping it would give me some ideas for new moves/exercises for my class routines. It does have lots of exercises... but it'll spend several pages with the same exercise just adding different equipment/positions: i.e., squats with weights, squats w/o weights, squats in wide stance, squats in mid stance, etc... each that cover the span of two pages and it counts each as a new exercise. It's great for beginners to sculpting and includes a ton of overview, but not many safety details or progressions (which is essential for any exercises!!!). Likewise, it assumes you have all kinds of equipment: weights, barbell, step/bench, etc., so half the book is useless if you're trying to do this stuff at home. The workout plans in the back of the book are great, again for beginners, but no one should ever really do some of these things without first having gone to a professional to make sure they're doing it properly...

Much better
Excelsior just updated their textbooks and started using this one in place of the Maternity/Peds book they had before. I was SO happy about this. This book is way better, and I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors yet. (The last book was so full of them that I refused to read it until they updated.) It also has better visual aids inside, and it can be used with The Point, which is one of my favorite things about it.

Long winded author who forgets what she said in the Last Chapter
The book keeps repeating the same information over and over and... You get my point. Some of it is contradictory for example in chapter 12 it lists Colace as a pregnancy Class C drug but in Chapter 13 it says Colace is safe to take with no teratogenic effects throught pregnancy. I thought maybe it was me so I actually looked up both pages and read one with the other and it absolutely cotridicts itself. I believe the authors wrote more words to make themselves appear more scholarly. If they would have put down their pens for a minute the book would be half as thick. If you don't absolutely need it for class, don't buy it!!!!!!

It has a wide variety of colorful illustrations and tables that went along with the readings that helped out a lot, especially if you are a visual learner and helped organize the information in a different way. This book was well organized according to topics and it was easy to find content unlike some books that make you search through the entire book. This book was very easy to read and understand and summed up the material nicely instead of dragging it out. This book also had case studies that went along with each chapter so as you were reading over the material you could also follow along with the case study. This was nice because it provides examples written out how it actually would be in real life and helps you to relate a diagnosis with certain symptoms. Not too sure about this one....
To be fair I have not finished it and will complete my review when I do. But it has quite a bit of I suppose "harsh truths" or fear based information at the beginning. I get the feeling if you are overweight or obese you have no chance of having a healthy/ normal child according to this woman. Or you do have a chance but it has a doom and gloom approach and the author even uses those words. I will give it a chance but it reminds me of What to Expect When you're expecting a bit...too fear based. I am interested in the recipes and again will update my review upon completion but I suggest sending a sample to your kindle to get a feel for it before purchase.

A must read for all women!
Dr. Avena does a wonderful job providing a simple guide for pregnant women on what to eat and why. There are not many books out there that explain WHY it's so important to eat certain foods at each stage of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy is a very exciting and traumatic experience and I think every woman wants to do the very best for themselves and their children during this time. The insight that Dr. Avena provides can make us better-informed patients and moms. There are many recipes within the book that I'm looking forward to trying. So far, I made the cereal bar recipe with my two older children and it was a hit!

As a mother herself, she understands the struggles women face during pregnancy and addresses them from 2 angles - her heart and her mind. I especially appreciated the simple yet creative recipes which I will use beyond pregnancy! I only wish she could write me a "guide" on What to Eat for the rest of my life....

it's like reading a really good story book --only it's non-fiction
Out of all of my nursing books, this one is definitely the most simple and straight to the point text on my shelf. Maternity/Newborn and Women's Health nursing is an entirely different, yet monster of a nursing specialty. This books is clear to explain our role as nurses and the complexities of the changes that occur during pregnancy. Each chapter has a focus that progresses, as a pregnancy would; it's like reading a really good story book --only it's non-fiction. This is a straight to follow text that i'm very pleased with, plus it's small size (at least in comparison to the lengthier ones out there) make it less daunting. Even if i don't go into this nursing specialty, it's still a book worth keeping because it makes great reference for any woman!

Foundations of Maternal-Newborn Nursing
Simple language and a lot of repetition makes this book an easy read. The concepts presented are not overly complicated, and the material is appropriate for an introduction to women's health nursing.

Currently taking OB course
Easy to read and go through, but I don't like how it will state, for instance, how hyperthermia is dangerous to pregnancy but won't give a description of why in that same section. There were many other instances like this in the text. I'm a person who likes all my pieces together, if I understand how a process works I'll remember it. If you just tell me it's bad without a why, I'm a little irritated. Overall, an acceptable text, but I believe you could find a better one for a course.

Edit (4/28): I would like to address the "basic recipes" complaints. I've cooked my whole life and even won cooking contests. Over the weekend I followed the recipes for four "basic" items: perfect poached eggs, perfect burgers, perfect seared chicken breast, and perfect whole roasted chicken. All four turned out great! The burgers were way better than my usual ones, and the seared chicken breast was ridiculously delicious...so good that I'll cook it weekly! Looking forward to cooking my way through the rest of the book.
