Excelsior just updated their textbooks and started using this one in place of the Maternity/Peds book they had before. I was SO happy about this. This book is way better, and I haven't found any grammar or spelling errors yet. (The last book was so full of them that I refused to read it until they updated.) It also has better visual aids inside, and it can be used with The Point, which is one of my favorite things about it.

Long winded author who forgets what she said in the Last Chapter

The book keeps repeating the same information over and over and... You get my point. Some of it is contradictory for example in chapter 12 it lists Colace as a pregnancy Class C drug but in Chapter 13 it says Colace is safe to take with no teratogenic effects throught pregnancy. I thought maybe it was me so I actually looked up both pages and read one with the other and it absolutely cotridicts itself. I believe the authors wrote more words to make themselves appear more scholarly. If they would have put down their pens for a minute the book would be half as thick. If you don't absolutely need it for class, don't buy it!!!!!!

I found this book to be very helpful for taking notes but was not good in terms of practice questions. It has a wide variety of colorful illustrations and tables that went along with the readings that helped out a lot, especially if you are a visual learner and helped organize the information in a different way. This book was well organized according to topics and it was easy to find content unlike some books that make you search through the entire book. This book was very easy to read and understand and summed up the material nicely instead of dragging it out. This book also had case studies that went along with each chapter so as you were reading over the material you could also follow along with the case study. This was nice because it provides examples written out how it actually would be in real life and helps you to relate a diagnosis with certain symptoms. Kids First Diabetes Second is a fantastic book filled with great tips, suggestions and advice for newly diagnosed families of children with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes). I wish this book was available when my son was diagnosed with type 1 back in 2008. The author shares her personal story about her daughter's diagnosis and as a fellow D-Mom, her words, feelings and responses mirrored my own throughout the book. What I loved about this book is that it is real. It is a book written by a Mother's journey/life experience from before diagnosis to present day. The book was also enjoyable to read as it featured stories from other D-Moms, D-Dads and friends of the author with Type 1 Diabetes. The book is the perfect marriage of good, solid information (both technical and practical) with the writing style and perspective of a mom. I took an aromatherapy weekend seminar as an introductory to this fascinating subject. Was I surprised as to how interesting and versitile aromatherapy is. I am a grandma that does day care for my daughter's two boys, one is six months the other is twenty eight months. Grandma has decided it is time to begin potty training. How is there not an audiobook for this?

Being that this is a book about kids with slow-processing speed (right here!), how on God's green earth is there not an audiobook for this? As I've heard the author herself mention audiobooks and text-to-speech tools numerous times as one of the "treatments" for individuals who suffer from such problems.

I would've grabbed the Kindle version and loaded it up in Voice Dream (an app that's quadrupled the amount I read), but thanks to Amazon's DRM stuff, that's easier said than done.

I want to read this book so bad! But I need to have it in a format that people like me (the high verbal ability, slow-processing speed people the book touches on) can digest and enjoy.

Audible, get with it and do what you were made to do! Or Ellen, better yet, open up GarageBand, flip to page one, hit record, and start reading. Purty please! Do it for we, the processing disabled! =)

Invaluable for parents that don't understand why their child's "slowness" impedes their academic achievement. I've bought several copies to hand out to my patients.

Excellent, easy read on slow processing speed.

My child was diagnosed with a slow processing speed 3-4 years ago. This book was a great resource in helping me further understand his challenges in school, family life, and socially. I read this book before his IEP at school so I would be prepared to not only understand all the terminology at the meeting ;but so I could ask for appropriate ways to help my son succeed at school. It was very easy to read, not written as a doctors reference but for busy parents. Chaspters are divided nicely and major points outlined. Great advice too. I am very happy I found this book.

It's only been 8 weeks since we started this protocol and my son is speaking more, regulating easier, listening better and giving us far more eye contact. I am also more calm as the massage is soothing. He is even making and remembering friends. I would rate this as one of our top 4 interventions of dozens we've explored.

The best part of this book is that it comes with the instructional DVD. This is essential for any lay person who has limited experience with any kind of massage or physical therapy. But most important, it works. Already seeing results!!!!!

Really helps my child...

This program was easy to learn and I have to say, has really helped my son with autism. Even though I do not perform it on him every day as recommended, I do it quite regularly and have found the following benefits: improvement in fine motor control and motor planning, a reduction in "stimming" and a reduction in his excessive muscle tone and rigidity. Amazingly, it often puts him to sleep. I find it is the only really effective means I have to calm his stimming when it becomes excessive and frenetic. It is also useful if he is just too wound up. Frankly, it is one of the most effective therapies (next to Equine Assisted Therapies) I have found, and we have had my son in an intensive program since he was two and half. It is very convenient since you don't need to leave home and can do it in just 15 minutes or so. Also, obviously, it is hugely cost effective. I have been doing this for about 5 months.

Finally a well-designed textbook

I have not used this textbook in school yet, but I have thumbed through it and I am very excited about it. It is beautiful and the organization is great. Key terms are always in blue in the main text and the definition is at the bottom of the page like a footnote - there if you need it, out of the way if you don't. Informational extras and tables are color coded and easy to find. So far it looks very thorough but an easy read. I have had textbooks that didn't have the key terms in the index but had seemingly irrelevant topics listed, but this book has a very thorough index which is a plus! Also, it is very modern and clean looking. I doubt I will spend half of my study time being frustrated by the book like I have in the past.

Useful everyday

This book was recommended to us when we received a probable diagnosis but it would take time before getting the evaluations needed to start therapy. It's very easy to read and offers useful strategies to engage your ASD child immediately. It has totally changed the way we interact with our son. Everyday activities like playing with toys, playing outside, mealtime, bath time, etc can be used to encourage your child to interact with others.

A good starting point
This book pointed me in the right direction, my son has light autism and it seems to be getting less so due to ABA Therapy, more social play & a slight change in diet.
One thing you need to know if you have a child that displays these tendencies is to relax, spend time playing with social toys with him, teach him to make eye contact with you, touch is very helpful, and don't rush looking for results. They will come.
This book just helped me get in a good mind set. As a parent you worry about your child‘s life experience and that is where stress enters the picture. Remember as a parent that getting a game plan together like Therapy & setting aside social play time will empower you and take away some of your stress.

I found this book to be extremely informative with real life ways to help your child make progress with their ability to communicate, sustain joint attention, and begin back and forth interactions! I only wish I had read it earlier! I can't say enough nice things about the progress my son has been making with the activities mentioned in this book!

Review :
A Great Book which will change your child's life for the better
This is quite an unusual book. It's not a practical guide to handling day to day issues with Autism, nor is it a dry clinical description of Autism. It's essentially a book promoting a new paradigm, (a whole new outlook) on Autism. It provides you with an understanding of some key positive concepts and then goes on to show how they can be put into practical use on a daily basis.

I feel that this book could be better described with the considerably less catchy title of; Ten concepts which your future happy and successful grown up child with autism needs you to know, understand, believe and "live" now - in order to ensure that the time line works out for the best.

Make no mistake, these aren't ten baby concepts which will only hold true for a small part of your child's life. They're adult ones, mantras for living - and they apply forever.

The book starts with a list of the 10 things which I'll list below because there are no surprises here...
Light bulb!

If you or anyone you know struggles to understand autism...this is the book! When my son was diagnosed Imhad a very hard time understanding what he was going thru...this book turned on the light bulb! It completely changed the way I thought about and cared for my son. Nothing short of life changing! The most important words "Meltdowns are more horrid for me than you" AND "I rely on you. All that I might become won't happen without you as my foundation. Be my advocate, be my guide, love me for who I am, and we'll see how far I can go".

From a paraeducator

The first time I read this book I was floored. In it was everything I had learned from my experiences as a paraeducator working with children who have autism. The fact that it is written in clear language that can be understood. I have made a point of sharing it with as many of my coworkers and classmates and I can get to read it and wish it was required reading for anyone who has anything to do with children, ANY children because most of the points made apply to many other children. The most important part I found is when she says that ALL BEHAVIOR IS COMMUNICATION!! Overall, one of my very favorite books.
