Before starting any of the exercises, there is a fitness assessment (based off of four exercises), and there are about 50 different routines provided that range from four to sixty minutes. There are some basic (succinct) explanations of steady-state vs. HIIT, afterburn, etc. Nutrition is covered in two pages. Accordingly, there are no recipes, but there are basic tips like keeping hydrated.The nice part is there really isn't any additional equipment required for the workouts. The equipment listed as required is footwear, a yoga mat, a watch, a towel, and a foam roller. Weights are mentioned as useful, but they are not mandatory. Goal setting and recovery (foam rolling) is briefly covered before stretches (pre- and post-workout are shown), and then there are exercises and routines until the end of the book. At the beginning of “Part I: The Foundation,” her journey into fitness, and how she optimized a strength training routine is covered. In “The Secret to Getting Lean for Life,” she covers deeper motivation to stay on track. In “A New System Designed Precisely for Women” she answered my major question, which was: “Do I need a gym membership in order to do the program(s) in this book? The answer: yes! Her reasoning is that you need progressive resistance and specific equipment i.e. a leg curl machine. An Amazing Workout Plan For Women
I have started this plan and was super sore after my first workout, and I do strength training on a regular basis as it is! So far I think this is an amazing plan. I love the way she really customizes everything for the woman's body. Trust me, she doesn't dumb it down for women, instead she customizes it for our bodies which are different from men's.
The reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would be nice to be able to submit questions to Holly regarding the plan. For instance, my gym doesn't have the prone position leg curl machine, just the seated leg curl machine, so it would be nice to be able to ask if there would be any modifications for that machine. Also, There are a couple of exercises where I question where she placed the "pause," after the "easy" instead of after the "hard." I tried to access the videos at both Holly's website and the Women's Health website and couldn't find them. Otherwise, I think this is an amazing plan and...

Planning on no pain meds? You NEED to read this book!
I only made it half way through this book and my son came early and even having only read half the book, I honestly don't think there is enough space for me to praise "Mindful Birthing" on here. I can't say thank you enough! When it came to having a natural child birth I can say the two biggest factors that kept me going were having a doula and reading this book. EVERYTHING Nancy says is dead on. I was just expecting to be in pain, I didn't know that the times between contractions are actually pleasurable because of oxytocin and that fearing the pain of the next contraction or getting caught up on the pain of the last one causes our body to produce adrenaline and that blocks oxytocin slowing down labor and making it more painful. In the 2nd part of labor I was actually falling in and out of sleep. There was a woman across the hall screaming her head off and I listened as the nurses mentioned all the pain meds they gave her and I had people in shock with how calm I was with no meds. My...
An accessible book on an important subject
I truly believe that this is the best book that I have read to prepare me for labor, birth and beyond. It is important for me to have a birth plan that is based in research. The birthing class that Bardacke outlines in the book is a modification of Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) program, which is an evidence-based intervention. In addition, mindful birthing is starting to have research backing as well!

I finished reading the book last week and have begun the mindful meditations - as part of the preparation the author urges you to commit to at least 30 minutes/day 6 days/week of meditation practice. The skills that I am learning will be applicable way beyond my daughter's birth day. I also purchased the "mindfulness for pregnancy" app for my iPhone, which includes some brief guided meditations and personalized practices. As a pediatric nurse & father of a 15 year old young man, the potty training methods in this book are priceless! I was surprised to learn that 50% of the world's children are potty trained by 1 year old (except in America). Potty Training
I am a grandma that does day care for my daughter's two boys, one is six months the other is twenty eight months. Grandma has decided it is time to begin potty training. I find this book informative, mommy is also reading the book so we are both on the same page with the training. I don't expect miracles, but feel all these suggestions will definitely help. Grandma is going into this with a very positive attitude, and a very loving heart.
