Fantastic!!
There is an old saying that say's, "If I fish for you today, you eat today but if I teach you to fish you eat forever." Brooke Siler has gone above and beyond with, The Women's Health Big Book of Pilates! She has provided the tools, in this book, for everyone to do Pilates (or eat forever) by utilizing the, easy to read and follow guidelines. The colorful pictures speak for themselves. Being a long time Pilates Instructor the book is exciting and fresh to me. Brooke has a way with words!Brooke teaches us to fish for ourselves in this book. Love this book!

The BEST resource for Pilates practitioners of ALL levels!
As a long time Pilates instructor, I have found it difficult when students ask for a book reference, to point them to a good, reputable source for classic Pilates. The only book I have ever recommended up until now is The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler. This new book, also written by Brooke Siler, is amazing. It includes information for all levels of practitioners, in an easy-to-use format with great pictures! I love everything about this book, and have recommended it both to my students and to anyone looking to start, or further deepen, their own Pilates practice.

Excellent, detailed, well-organized
This book is excellent! I also own Brooke Siler's other book, "The Pilates Body", which was my original introduction to Pilates years ago. I had thought that was the only book I'd ever need about Pilates, but I was wrong! This new book goes above & beyond. The first few chapters are for people new to Pilates -- she gives a detailed background about founder Joseph Pilates, her own training, and answers common questions about it and explains how it gets you fit.
The next section is "Pilates for your Plate," which teaches you how to eat healthy. Then is a chapter on technique -- do not skip this chapter! It explains how to do the exercises with proper form. She also includes several modifications, such as for low-back problems or knee problems.

The next section, "Pilates on the Mat: The Series," is divided up into 4 levels, of increasing advancement. So you can start with the level you feel most comfortable. The way the exercises are illustrated is...

Get ready to go deep
I travel the country, a 3 -D model of the female pelvis in hand and educate women about their pelvises. I try to read every book out there to recommend what i feel are the best on the market about this covert subject. Wild Feminine stands out amongst all the books that i recommend because it takes on the subject in a very different way. Wild Feminine asks women to do some of our own deep internal work both literally and psychologically/spiritually. Tami Lynn Kent asks us to stop and take the time to figure out how we FEEL about our pelvis and how our pelvis feels about us. She guides us to listen with compassion to the stories of our pelvis. Having taught this work for over 5 years, I know EVERY woman's pelvis has a story. Many of them are filled with sorrow and pain. Ms. Kent's voice is one of a true healer that puts the reader at ease and guides the reader to invite the feelings to be experienced and brought to light. The book is filled with writing exercises and rituals to...
Women's Health Essential
I am lucky to live and work in the same community as the author, Tami Lynn Kent. That she has brought us this book, while raising 3 children and working outside the home is a miracle in itself! This book will help all students of natural medicine and women's health weave together the lessons we have learned from our great teachers, Dr. Northrup, Dr. Arvigo, Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Ina May Gaskin - to name just a few. Tami is a scribe for those of us pioneering back into the frontier we left behind, but can never escape, the Wild Feminine! This book is also written in a way that all students, regardless of experience or training can comprehend.

Every woman needs to read this book
Beautiful book for helping woman to reclaim their divine feminine nature. The techniques Kent recommends are very honoring and healing for the female body. I recommend this book to all my clients now who have any type of lower chakra imbalance, including infertility issues, sexual blocks or wounds, pelvic distortions, menopause, gynecological challenges, etc.

Cured Me!
I found out about this book through a raw blog. A guy described his battle with candidiasis. I didn't realize that guys could get it and I never realized that candidiasis manifested itself in a spectrum of ways that I suffered from. I purchased this book and spend about 2 weeks reading, studying, and highlighting the book. I started the diet last Monday and I have to admit that the book has become my bible just because it's been a huge change for me that I continually have to refer back to the book. I photocopied a couple pages of the book to carry around with me and use as a reference when I'm out and I have to figure out what I can eat.

I used to be on the raw food diet, ate organic and healthy and I was still experiencing a low immune system, breaking out, and a chronic yeast infection that I've had for over 5 years. I've tried treating the yeast infection with antibiotics, a watered down hydrogen peroxide douche, and boric acid suppositories. None of the...
Covers an important topic, but lacks substance
It seems that in most cases that nonfiction authors are motivated by one of two things when creating their works. Some feel that they have some sort of information that needs sharing, and use books as a way to get their word out. These authors have a true passion for their topic, which clearly shows when reading their books. Others are driven purely by profit. Sadly, it seems that the latter is true of Donna Gates and her Body Ecology Diet. Though this book does cover an important topic, it lacks substance and fails to deliver. However, it may be a good source for someone used to only mainstream health books and wanting a simple primer on the subject.
While the book is easy to read, it seems to offer no new information that is not readily available in other books or on the internet. Gates seems to favor certain foods and products, such as coconut water kefir, yet fails to thoroughly justify her preference for them, and supports her claims with little scientific research. However,...
Yes, but ...
I agree with what some of the other folks who did not give this book a 5-star rating had to say; HOWEVER, the principles at the heart of this book are priceless for us all. YES, the book is not very well thought out, it's structure leaves much to be desired, the graphic of the eating plan is a disgrace, there are a lot of details that simply are not there and the author does leave you with a lot of questions ... BUT, the idea of the good bacteria vs. bad bacteria that lives in our gut is right on and I guarantee you can be free of a plethora of different symptoms should you choose to follow the few simple principles in this book. Now, as far as the author constantly pitching her products goes (and boy does she) you need to look past that; think of it as her just helping you along with a one-stop shopping site to get you started eating this way ... hey, a girl has to make a buck - let's not hold this against her. I started out ordering some of her products at the get-go because I was...

The author of Gutbliss and one of today’s preeminent gastroenterologists distills the latest research on the microbiome into a practical program for boosting overall health.

Michael Pollan’s widely discussed New York Times article, “Some of My Best Friends Are Germs,” was just the tip of the iceberg. The microbiome—the collective name for the trillions of bacteria that live in our gut—is today’s hottest medical news topic. Synthesizing the latest findings, Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains how the standard Western diet and lifestyle are starving our microbiome, depleting the “good bugs” that keep us healthy and encouraging overgrowth of exactly the wrong type of bacteria. The resulting imbalance makes us more prone to disease and obesity and negatively affects our metabolism, our hormones, our cravings, our immunity, and even our genes. But beyond the science, what sets this book apart is Dr. Chutkan’s powerful three-level program for optimizing your gut bacteria for good health.
Dr. Chutkan shares:
  • Why hand-sanitizing gels and antibiotics are stripping our bodies of their natural protective systems
  • Essential prebiotics and probiotics
  • Recipes with ingredients that replenish the microbiome for each rehab level
  • Cutting-edge research on the connection between the microbiome and the brain
  • An intro to the stool transplant, the superfix for a severely troubled microbiome

Dr. Chutkan is one of the most recognizable gastroenterologists working in America today, and this is the first book to distill the research into a practical, effective plan for replenishing our microbiomes. The Microbiome Solution will bring welcome relief to the millions who want to grow a good “gut garden”—and enjoy healthier, happier lives.

A different way to live... it's a bible of better personal care
This is my third gut book in the past year and is the most helpful. It took a while to get used to the theme which is "live dirty, eat clean" but after a while it makes sense. A few things that caught my eye as good ideas in the area of having a profound effect on your external and internal microbiome::

-Get a bidet and quit taking so many baths.
-Make your own skin and hair products using stuff like coconut oil and manuka honey

There's details on whether you need a probiotic and which one to take. A lot of probiotics are not helping.

The recipes are low sugar. high fiber. The chocolate chip cookies made with almond flour instead of wheat flour are excellent. But the author does a great job of mixing up the things you can do with kale and other high nutrition ingredients.

Makes the point that it isn't that meat is bad for us but rather that lack of plant fiber is.

How Sick Are You? Ask Your Gut, Not Your Doctor
We live in a new age of weird diseases and symptoms -- many traveling under the "auto-immune" banner. People by the droves go to their primary care doctors and complain of stomach and digestive ailments (bloating, food allergies, abdominal pain), light-headedness, fatigue, skin rashes, eczema, rosacea, and worse. Their doctors, in turn, follow the protocols of their training and order up standard tests in search of something physical. The tests come back negative. Now doc is beginning to wonder if he has a hypochondriac on his hands, and the patients either persist or resign themselves to pain and misery, becoming depressed as symptoms continue to plague them. Sometimes more tests are ordered, but seldom is a solution found. It's a bad scene all around. Welcome to the world of microbes, the artful dodgers (at least when it comes to standard medical tests).

If you fit the description above, you should be reading Dr. Chutkan's latest book. She talks about...
We are lacking in good bacteria~Get in balance and feel better!
This book came just in time for me. It is written in clear easy to understand language. So many of todays common illnesses are due to the over use of antibiotics. I was a Microbiologist when working so I saw that all the time. I too am a victim of too many and I am paying the price now. If you have fatigue, bloating, constipation, brain fog, depression, weight gain and many more, it may be an imbalance in your intestinal flora. Little did our oarents know all those unnecessary antibiotics as a child could cause us so much trouble as adults.

I have so much highlighted and questions written in my book to ask my doctor about. I never knew thzt treating my acid reflux could cause so much damage. I hope to get off some medications and start the Live Dirty Eat Clean plan soon. Most likely since I am in such poor health it will be a long journey but I have found hope in this book that even very severe cases can at least make some improvement.

I think all parents...

In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. Review :
Great book for teens, pre-teens and parents alike

This is a great book for anyone interested in the process of growing up. I am a 15 year old girl and my mom got me this book when I was 10 years old, and I love it. It answered all my questions about growing up. Some people think that this book is too advanced for your average pre-teen, but having been there just a few years ago, I can assure you that it is not. The book provides a lot of information that I was curious about, yet too embarrassed to ask about. Even being so young when I got the book, I can assure you that it did not cause me to grow up any faster... it only caused me to grow up at a normal speed with more information. I still read the book as I experience new things, and because of this book and the topics it discussed, I was more assured about the changes going on inside of me.

Wonderful book!
My mother bought this book for me when I was ten. Her mother had never explained any aspect of puberty or menstruation to her and she was afraid of giving me confusing or incorrect information. I remember reading this book cover to cover at least five times and going through it again as I was a teenager and had questions. I developed earlier than most girls and this book was a reassuring source of information. It not only taught me a lot about my body and what was happening, but was a boost to my self-esteem because it talked about differences as being o.k. I haven't read the new edition, mine is 15 years old, but I can't imagine anything better for a mother to give her daughter as she enters puberty. It opened a line of communication between my mom and me about a topic that is not always easy to discuss with your parents at that age. I would recommend this book to ANY parent for his/her daughter.

Girls' High School Basketball Coach/AD jlori81@gte.net
My wife and teenage daughters teased me about reading this book. But as someone who works with girls in sports, I felt it was important to know what is going on with girls at this age. Was the book informative? Yes. It had two strong points: 1) It treats sexuality and associated taboo subjects as normal parts of life. Really, I cannot understand why some of the other reviewers thought the information was too graphic; 2) I was particularly intrigued with some of the sex-related questions young people ask. At first, their questions seemed ridiculous and so naive but then you realize they ask them because we treat the subjects of puberty and sexuality with such secrecy. No wonder some of the questions are so hilarious! The book treats each of the major subjects in a simple straightforward way. There is nothing difficult to understand and young women are supported for their decisions and preferences. The author also makes some suggestions ( based on adult wisdom and her...

Planning on no pain meds? You NEED to read this book!
I only made it half way through this book and my son came early and even having only read half the book, I honestly don't think there is enough space for me to praise "Mindful Birthing" on here. I can't say thank you enough! When it came to having a natural child birth I can say the two biggest factors that kept me going were having a doula and reading this book. EVERYTHING Nancy says is dead on. I was just expecting to be in pain, I didn't know that the times between contractions are actually pleasurable because of oxytocin and that fearing the pain of the next contraction or getting caught up on the pain of the last one causes our body to produce adrenaline and that blocks oxytocin slowing down labor and making it more painful. In the 2nd part of labor I was actually falling in and out of sleep. There was a woman across the hall screaming her head off and I listened as the nurses mentioned all the pain meds they gave her and I had people in shock with how calm I was with no meds. My...
An accessible book on an important subject
I truly believe that this is the best book that I have read to prepare me for labor, birth and beyond. It is important for me to have a birth plan that is based in research. The birthing class that Bardacke outlines in the book is a modification of Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) program, which is an evidence-based intervention. In addition, mindful birthing is starting to have research backing as well!

I finished reading the book last week and have begun the mindful meditations - as part of the preparation the author urges you to commit to at least 30 minutes/day 6 days/week of meditation practice. The skills that I am learning will be applicable way beyond my daughter's birth day. I also purchased the "mindfulness for pregnancy" app for my iPhone, which includes some brief guided meditations and personalized practices. In addition, I was told that they are going to release an audio version of the guided meditation on iTunes at the end of...
Could be the only book you need to read if you are pregnant
This book has the potential to cause a real shift away from the fear that has come to surround childbirth. By teaching tools to cope with whatever comes up in the birth process, Mindful Birthing is offering a way for couples to trust themselves to be able to work with whatever happens. In contrast to the movement of "trusting your body" or trusting the process" which can set people up for a feeling of failure, Mindful Birthing offers an alternative which can serve people throughout pregnancy, birth and parenting. And really throughout the rest of their lives. Beautifully and truthfully written, with no romance and no fluff. Highly recommended.

Many women live their lives believing that they can’t ask for what they want until they change something they’re unhappy with. No promotion until they get new skills. No relationship until they establish their career. No fulfillment until they find love. One of the most common conditions women place on themselves is weight loss—no love until they lose weight, no sex until they lose weight, no happiness until they lose weight. But Jessica Ortner, co-producer of the highly successful documentary on meridian tapping, The Tapping Solution, offers women a better choice. Why not lose the weight and create the life you’ve always dreamt of?
As a culture obsessed with weight loss, we all know the latest fads that claim to help us drop pounds instantly. What often isn’t discussed is the science behind the issue and how learning to deal with stress can promote and accelerate weight loss. Not only does stress create an overabundance of cortisol that is directly related to abdominal obesity, it also impacts behavior, supporting bad habits, including using food to deal with difficult emotions and painful situations.
In this groundbreaking book, Jessica uses tapping to help tackle the stress that leads to weight gain—including the personal stresses of low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. Using her own struggles with weight loss, along with success stories of some of the thousands of women she’s worked with, Jessica walks readers through the process of discovering their personal power and self-worth.
Her program is based on extensive research into the benefits and success of tapping and the hormones involved in stress and weight gain. In this book she guides readers through a proven process of overcoming their dependency on food. She covers everything from the emotional aspects of overeating and cravings, to how to find joy in exercise, the power of pleasure, and how our families and friends may inadvertently add to the problem.
With hope, heart, humor, and science, Jessica weaves a path to a happy, healthy life full of confidence and joy.

Not Another Diet Book - The Solution to the Problem
So many people think that they would be happy if they could just lose weight or look differently. What if that is completely backward? What if the weight is not the source of our unhappiness, but is actually the result of our hidden feelings and beliefs?

This is the premise of Jessica Ortner's new book, "The Tapping Solution for Weight Loss & Body Confidence". Weight loss has become big business and a national obsession, as two thirds of Americans are overweight and one third are considered obese. If you have tried all of the diets and programs (you probably have or you wouldn't be here), this is the missing component that other programs need.

Another diet is not the answer. Losing weight is not rocket science. There is not a heavy person in the world that doesn't know that broccoli is good for you and donuts are bad. The reason most diet books don't work is because they focus on weight or food, but never address the root cause of why you are eating too much. The...
The Title Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
This book is what everyone else says...warm, inviting, like talking with a friend. Jessica Ortner has been there and done that and was able to get a smaller sized t-shirt from the journey. So she understands.

In her book, Jessica addresses what extra weight is really about and gives the reader actionable (and easily doable) steps to effect healing within themselves and to make the shifts that they desire in their bodies, energy and lives.
Tapping is easy. You can do it anyway and Jessica shows, in this book, how easy it is to make those changes that you have previously struggled with. While Jessica didn't 'invent' tapping, she brings the practice to readers in such a comfortable, safe way that they feel supported as they work through the book.

But this book's story is much bigger than tapping or weight loss. It is about confidence. As a matter of transparency, I am the illustrator for this book. My first published illustrations. I am so excited and the...
Kindle edition problem
I hope I can update this review later! Reading the Kindle version. It's an awesome read and I am very intrigued. I think the book is written very well and I can't stop reading... until I get stuck on an obviously missing section. That is more than annoying! Fix the electronic version before you charge money it! It's like a stupid cliffhanger in a great series :-(.

This is not your run-of-the-mill fitness book. Developed by world-renowned gluteal expert Bret Contreras, Strong Curves offers an extensive fitness and nutrition guide for women seeking to improve their physique, function, strength, and mobility.

Contreras spent the last eighteen years researching and field-testing the best methods for building better butts and shapelier bodies. In Strong Curves, he offers the programs that have proven effective time and time again with his clients, allowing you to develop lean muscle, rounded glutes, and greater confidence.

Each page is packed with information decoding the female anatomy, providing a better understanding as to why most fitness programs fail to help women reach their goals. With a comprehensive nutritional guide and over 200 strength exercises, this book gets women off the treadmill and furnishes their drive to achieve strength, power, and sexy curves from head to toe.

Although the glutes are the largest and most powerful muscle group in the human body, they often go dormant due to lifestyle choices, leading to a flat, saggy bum. Strong Curves is the cure.

Review :
Best strength building programme for women. Hands down!!!
I bought this book a couple of years ago, and thought the exercises looked too easy to start with, so put it away. I mean, how hard is a body weight bridge?
A year later I completed the Lift Like a Goddess programme and looked for something new. I dragged out this book and decided to give level 1 a go. Yes, the amount of exercises were shorter than I was used to, and I didn't come home from the gym feeling smashed. I left each time feeling I could give more.

However, don't be fooled by the shorter workouts! I found I could not do more than 6 bodyweight bridges without getting a cramp. To attempt even 1 holding a weight on my stomach was sheer impossibility. So I gladly stayed at level 1 and worked through it consistently. The day after each workout, was I ever sore.

Within 3 weeks I found myself getting stronger. Then, so surprisingly, I managed a proper squat. I have severe scoliosis and a damaged Achilles' tendon due to surgery on my leg for the scoliosis...
Gorgeous Glutes, Better Body
Wow, how do I even start this review. First I'd like to mention that I'm not genetically gifted in the glute department. I love my body and am naturally thin, but I've always wanted a better butt. Earlier this year, I stumbled across Bret's blog, and learned about the barbell glute bridge and barbell hip thrust. I was hesitant, but having tried just about every method out there, including yoga, Pilates, spin, step, circuits, squats, lunges, and deadlifts, I decided I had nothing to lose by listening to Bret's advice. Fast-forward four months later - I've put 3 inches on my glutes, I have a great butt for the first time in my life, and my confidence and enjoyment in the gym is at an all-time high.

I'm a big believer in Bret's methods and I think that most women should be training in this fashion. That said, before Strong Curves, I realize I was just "winging it," and I didn't really understand how to design my workouts. I've been patiently waiting to receive my Strong Curves...
Good information, needs an Index (edited: index created!)
Edited update to review: The author has provided an index! The link is in the comments, and I'll try and post it here. Since that was all that was really lacking for me I changed the stars as well. Thanks Kelly! and thanks to Marie for her version in the interim!

Original Review:
This book has a lot of great stuff- the workout plans and exercise guides offer lots of great information.

However, it would have been amazing if someone had taken the time to make an actual index for the "Exercise Index." Throughout the book there are great plans that list and picture workouts/exercises. However, to see the details of an exercise, or to see alternate exercises, one is simply instructed to refer to the detailed "Exercise Index." Pretty easy! Except.... the exercise index has no list of page numbers and exercises. You have to go through the entire thing to find the exercises (which are...

I am an occupational therapist and I love this book! It is loaded with useful and practical ideas for kiddos/students with a variety of issues! Author is definitely knowledgable and I totally recommend this book! Worth every cent!

Great start
Good introduction to self-regulation, wish there was more info. and more substance. I will keep up with the author's blog.

Useful book for school OT's
As an OT that works in the schools, I thought the book was a good resource to have on hand for parents and teachers. It was well organized and easy to read.
