Great book!! More details and very organized breakdown of strategies. Great resources for Therapists and parents.

Not as helpful as I'd hoped
Not as helpful as I had expected. This was recommended from my daughter's therapist. I was hoping for some more activity ideas. It is a good book with useful information, but i was looking for something that had more specific direction, rather than so many explanations and history.

Like the bestselling first edition, this new edition of Activity Schedules will show thousands of parents and service providers how to use this teaching tool to help children and adults successfully engage in self-directed and purposeful activities.

Activity schedules are a set of pictures or words that cue a child to follow a sequence of steps. Based on ABA methods, learners are taught using a system of graduated guidance--physical prompts systematically faded as performance increases. Once the individual has mastered their use, he or she can independently follow a schedule to engage in activities at home, at school, and during leisure time. For example, activity schedules can cue an individual to prepare food with minimal assistance, interact with classmates, and complete a puzzle.

Based on over 20 years of research the authors have conducted at the Princeton Child Development Institute, the second edition discusses the latest research that points to positive outcomes from using activity schedules, including better self-management, decreased problem behaviors, and skill generalization, among other findings. The new edition includes:

-How to use activity schedules to organize all aspects of a person's daily activities, and increase engagement, task completion, making appropriate choices, and sequencing activities;

-An expanded section on the use of activity schedules by adults, describing how they are used at home and in the workplace and via iPods and Blackberries;

-How to use activity schedules to promote social interaction and to teach children to point to and show objects to others in order to share a social experience.

Detailed instructions and examples help parents prepare their child's first schedule, then progress to more varied and sophisticated schedules, leading to greater independence.

amazing for high functioning verbal kids

Though my youngster could talk, he rarely spoke spontaneously. This book helped enormously in getting my youngster to begin using all kinds of speech...he now comments on his work, invites me to play with him, tells me what he is going to do...its amazing! The structure of the activity schedule facilitated all of this new spontaneous speech. Its hard work but well worth the effort

Great concrete things I can do for my visual child
Having a child diagnosed with PDD, I read a lot of books on autism and found few that are as practical as this one. Even though my 5 yr-old is starting to be verbal, he is much more visual and I find this book extremely helpful as it offers concrete things and examples that I can use and apply to my child. I'm buying more copies to give to his teachers and other caregivers to ensure they also do the same things for him when he is in their care.

Excellent reference for parents, concise, clear, readable.
Activity schedules are very useful. They helped our three-year old son (with PDD) talk more appropriately, make choices, become more independent and self-disciplined, engage in less stereotypy, and be meaningfully occupied when he is at home. They are a great complement to a formal behavioral intervention program. The book is great because it explains clearly how to develop them, how to teach them, what to do and what not to do, in plain english. The authors avoided technical jargon without sacrificing the high scientific standards they are respected for. You can use what you have read immediately. A must read, not only for parents of children with autism or PDD, but for special education teachers, therapists and other autism professionals.

Review :
Outstanding resource for kids on the autism spectrum
As a clinical psychologist working primarily with children on the autism spectrum, I have found this book to be incredibly helpful for my patients and their families. The book is filled with exercises and activities that are easy to put into practice for not only clinicians, but also parents and teachers. The activities are tailored specifically for children on the autism spectrum - meaning they feature simplified language, lots of pictures and hands-on exercises, easy-to-teach "scripts" (my favorite is the "Plan A versus Plan B"), and many activities that are actually quite engaging and fun for the kids. It's not one of those books that drones on and on about theory - this is all about practical ways to help kids who have problems with flexibility. Overall, a wonderful resource that I keep coming back to- highly recommend!

A must have manual for those who work with children with High Functioning ASD
This is a well-written and well-organized workbook directed to teachers, but very applicable to therapists who are looking to teach and support executive skills to (~8-11 year-old) children. Although the primary focus is for high functioning autism spectrum disorders, it is also very helpful for children with ADHD, Anxiety-related disorders and other neuropsychological difficulties. As noted on the title, the primary focus is flexibility and organization/planning skills. It is not intended for children with intellectual disabilities or children with significant language disorders.

This practical book contains a state-of-the-art curriculum developed by experts in the field, including special ed teachers, psychologists, neuropsychologists, therapists and parents of children with high-functioning ASDs. It integrates the scientific knowledge of how executive dysfunction and social learning disorders overlaps to cause behavioral and learning challenges. A nice aspect is that...
The most helpful book I've ever bought!
This book has helped me on so many levels help my son who has autism. I can take him shopping or take him to school; have him try new foods at a restaurant and even have him do something totally off his schedule and not have the meltdown explosive behaviors that he use to have. One of the things that this book teaches is that if I want him to be more flexible then I have to model what that looks like for him. I've learned to help him realize that when he is stuck that there are coping strategies that he can use. My son is so much more relaxed and I am so proud of how he is able to breathe and calm himself down rather quickly.

I recommend this book to anyone who has a child in need of being more flexible and goal directed!!

As a Social Worker who provides counseling to elementary school students I am always looking for ways to help my students who struggle with self-regulation. Though talk therapy and cognitive behavioral treatment are effective some students need an immediate strategy they can easily learn and utilize in the moment. This book has addressed the gap between the behavior and the time it takes for the child to learn various other management skills. I've used the book in my sessions to teach the strategies in 5 minutes. It is satisfying to see my students using "finger pulls", "wall pushes" and other strategies I've taught from the book as a way to self-regulate in the moment. I highly recommend this book as a resource for anyone attempting to help a child understand how to manage intense emotions.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR EVERY PARENT AND TEACHER!!!
This is an amazing work for educators, parents, and children! The language is clear, but the ideas are profound. As someone who works with children with an array of disabilities, I can't thank Lauren enough for publishing this guide. When I think of how much simple exercises such as "the finger-pull" or pressure holds and breathing techniques have helped the children I work with, I am amazed. I only wish this book was around 20 years ago when I was raising my own children!!

Teaches Great Skills that work!
I am a therapist who recently started working with kids who had sensory issues. When this book arrived, my 11 year old saw it and asked to read it. I recently learned that she has actually been using some of the exercises she learned about in the book. Yesterday, I commented that I noticed she has been doing great recently behavior and attitude wise, and she mentioned the pretzel she learned in the book has helped her at school when she feels nervous or angry. So this is definitely helpful and teaches kids some great skills. I learned a whole lot and based on what my kid said, the exercises actually work!

The Most Comprehensive Yoga for Children Book Yet
As a yoga teacher for over a decade, an educator and parent I can honestly say this is one of the most comprehensive yoga books out there for bringing the many fold practices and facets of yoga to the young. I can clear a few books of the shelf and replace it with this one. The author's experiences and credentials definitely shine through in this well thought out and written book. Must have, great present for the parent or educator in your life.

Every family should have this book!
Even if you know nothing about yoga, this book will guide you and your children (and grandchildren too) on how to bring yoga into your lives and Lisa makes it fun too! As a yoga teacher for adults I highly recommend the book, for ALL ages!

An Essential Kids Yoga Resource
I have fallen in love with the book, Yoga for Children, by Lisa Flynn. Here's why:

1. Good introductory info

The beginning of the book outlines what yoga is and the benefits of yoga for kids. It also has developmentally appropriate activities based on age range and a list of props and toys for yoga. It provides a good foundation before moving into actually doing yoga with kids. Invaluable for a new kids yoga teacher, or a parent that wants to do yoga with their kids.

2. Doesn't water down yoga for kids

Includes core principles of yoga and how to teach them to children using yoga, storybooks, and discussion points. Not all children's yoga resources do this!

3. Wonderful mindfulness and meditation ideas to do with kids.

Contains many original mindfulness ideas that I've never thought of or seen elsewhere. Mindfulness is such an important aspect of yoga, and it's nice to see this section in the front of the book before...

Excellent Resource for Professionals!
This is an excellent intervention model that combines the best of developmental and naturalistic behavioral models for children with autism. The books is very well written and provides clear descriptions of the intervention components and methodologies. The flow charts to assist practiioners with understanding how to individualize the program for children who may need more support are especially helpful. The authors provide a theoretical framework and informamtion regarding reserach into the model and then the following chapters offer specific steps involved in conducting an appropriate assessment, developing clear, measurable goals and implementing the intervention to meet those goals. Specific instructions for targettng core features of autism in very young children, like imiation and joint attention, are outlined in detail. Practioners can use this manual to develop a program that meets children's IFSP needs/goals and to measure progress along the way. I highly recommend this...
Lots of joint attention material.
Generally I use the VB-MAPP, and it's been fantastic, but I have found some domains of the assessment more difficult to use as a curriculum guide, specifically social skills. This assessment. Which is also criterion-based, breaks down how to teach joint attention skills and early social skills like responding to gestures. I read it over the weekend and got so excited to update my programs with all the fun material. One thing I thought was odd-- it's criterion referenced to children with autism, not neurotypical development, so if you are attempting to approximate typical development, you'll need to cross reference it somehow.

Also, it seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis. Parents reviewing it said it is too technical, but I needed it to be more technical and have more research behind it. It makes assertions that aren't supported by the body of evidence, which is really frustrating. However, it is still very useful as supplement to lesson planning for behavioral...
Nothing New Here, Move Along
I currently have my child enrolled in RDI, have taken the More Than Words program, and employed Floortime techniques to interact with my ASD child. So I was really hoping that this book would provide me with more ideas on play based or relationship based therapies. I was really disappointed that this book was more of a theoretical view of autism and how they conducted their study. In fact, the book states that the kids in the study had to meet a certain set of skills before their techniques could be employed. You really can't use their techniques on every child in the autism spectrum (their website states it is targeted for ages 14mos - 3 yrs). Their study even includes a child who can already imitate at 18 months. Are their techniques more for higher functioning ASD children? It kind of makes me wonder.

Now about their techniques, it's just about alternating sessions of ABA and play/social based interactions with the parents (sounds like Floortime or Son Rise to...

Some good activities
This book has some good activities to help children with ADHD master key skills, but many of the activities are "paper and pencil" and therefore not particularly engaging. Other books on this topic that I recommend:
ADHD: 102 Practical Strategies for 'Reducing the Deficit'

Simon Says Pay Attention: Help for Children with ADHD

Putting on the Brakes: Understanding and Taking Control of Your ADD or ADHD

Great Workbook!
We have found this workbook to have a great variety of topics that are helping our son with many of his area's of need. When he has had a difficult day, we look through the topics, find one that seems most appropriate and work though that section of the workbook together. It has helped him focus on the topics, think through issues, and has helped us discover some of the things that he is thinking and feeling but had not been able to express.

Good,practical,
I found this book to be not only useful in helping kids with ADHD but also with parents who wish to help their children cope better in life generally. The book has lots of practical skills, and activities for kids to do,but they are heavily pencil based which maybe difficult for some people. However, they are short exercises, which is great, from decision making, getting organised ,dealing with homework, controlling anger to specific behaviour. Many exercises could be done as part of a daily conversation or as a family activity to help reinforce what has been done from the book. Again, I think every family (ADHD or NOT) could benefit from many of these exercises. However there are two points which I think could be improved in this book.
1. The author constantly uses "kids with ADHD,many kids with ADHD,some kids with ADHD",and after a few exercises, it seems to drill into the child/parent that they are ADHD. So i would prefer the author dropped the ADHD label. After all the person...

More for Autism, not so much for Aspergers
I did not get much out of this for my two high IQ Auties. It really focuses on the more severe symptoms of lower-functioning autism. But it is SOOOOOO good... Too bad I can't use much of it. I wish folks wouldn't lump these diagnoses together. So different. Different needs and symptoms. Still, this would be an INCREDIBLE resource for autistic kids.

This book answered the question 'so now what?'
One of the reasons I liked this book was that we received mixed input from friends and family regarding our son's diagnosis, especially since he was 4.5. This book indicated many examples of habits and behaviors that gave my husband and I 'ah-ha!' moments and it helped us feel less powerless to help our son. we knew that traditional ways of dealing with certain things did not work with our son and this book helped point out things that did.

Bridget's Review
I think everyone should read this book so that they can understand the struggles that parents and children face. It has great ideas for teaching children with these conditions but a lot of the tips apply to people who deal with a child who has ADD or ADHD or just doesn't have the desire to learn. It's a big book but it doesn't take as long to read it as you would think.
