What would you do for five million dollars? Adam and Evia Langston have lived in their own little garden of Eden since the two married at the age of seventeen. Working their way up from the humblest of beginnings, the Langstons have thrived beyond anything they could have ever imagined. Now they live in the finest home, drive the best cars, and indulge in all the trimmings that signify their massive success.

But then the recession hits and rips apart the family’s financial stability. Unable to support their three children and other relatives, Adam and Evia find themselves drowning in financial trouble and teetering on the brink of complete disaster. With nowhere to turn, the Langstons have no idea what to do.

Until Shay-Shaunté, Evia’s multimillionaire boss, comes to the Langstons with a five-million-dollar offer that seems so hard to refuse. Will the Langstons make this deal? Or will they recognize that the glitter of five million dollars may be far from gold?

Review :
A High Price To Pay For Money
In her tenth novel, Victoria Christopher Murray has penned an emotionally gripping story that has brought to life a cast of characters caught up in a tragedy as timeless and evocative as those of the Ancient Greeks or Shakespeare. Evia and Adam were a couple living the American Dream, until Adam lost his high paying corporate job. Now they find themselves living the American nightmare. There's more month than money and financial ruin is imminent, but there's a life raft - an offer of $5 Million Dollars if they'll.... They take the deal, but then their lives spin out of control. Murray convinces readers with a conviction of a skilled writer that you cannot, should not dance with the devil. I thought about this story long after I closed the book.

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight...you shouldn't
Adam and Evia Langston are experiencing financial lows because of unemployment, greed, and lust. Evia's supervisor Shay offers her a silly million dollar deal. Evia and Adam accept the deal and pay, royally. This is an average novel - starts slow and heats up towards the end. It is not christian fiction. The way Evia and Adam are described when they have sex should have been omitted. It is lengthy and sometimes boring.
It's not the typical Victoria Murray Book. Not enough suspense and too much whining. I understand it is fiction but life imitates art. This book was imaginative like a cartoon. I give it an OKAY rating because the message I got from it ---if you dance with the devil, you should expect to get burnt. To me, this is a positive message that is very useful.

strong inspirational family drama
As she nears her fiftieth birthday, wealthy Shay-Shaunte knows what she wants as her special present. Until Shay-Shaunte offers one of her executive assistant, Evia Langston five million dollars for a weekend with the latter's husband Adam. Stunned Evia says no thanks.

However, Evia knows her family could use the money as they are nearing financial ruin with the economy tanking. She also knows that when she and Adam exchanged vows in front of the Lord when they were seventeen, they pledged a faith based relationship to raise their kids in. Now Evia and Adam must choose between the she-devil serpent's glittering offering to save the Langston's Garden of Eden or trusting in God to take care of them and their children.

The immediate reaction is The Deal, the Dance, and the Devil is a gender bending version of Redford's Indecent Proposal to Moore and Harrelson; but that is only at the surface. Instead this is a much deeper profound character driven tale as...

“Kirstin Downey’s lively, substantive and—dare I say—inspiring new biography of Perkins . . . not only illuminates Perkins’ career but also deepens the known contradictions of Roosevelt’s character.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR Fresh Air

One of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s closest friends and the first female secretary of labor, Perkins capitalized on the president’s political savvy and popularity to enact most of the Depression-era programs that are today considered essential parts of the country’s social safety network.

Frances Perkins is no longer a household name, yet she was one of the most influential women of the twentieth century. Based on eight years of research, extensive archival materials, new documents, and exclusive access to Perkins’s family members and friends, this biography is the first complete portrait of a devoted public servant with a passionate personal life, a mother who changed the landscape of American business and society.

Frances Perkins was named Secretary of Labor by Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. As the first female cabinet secretary, she spearheaded the fight to improve the lives of America’s working people while juggling her own complex family responsibilities. Perkins’s ideas became the cornerstones of the most important social welfare and legislation in the nation’s history, including unemployment compensation, child labor laws, and the forty-hour work week.

Arriving in Washington at the height of the Great Depression, Perkins pushed for massive public works projects that created millions of jobs for unemployed workers. She breathed life back into the nation’s labor movement, boosting living standards across the country. As head of the Immigration Service, she fought to bring European refugees to safety in the United States. Her greatest triumph was creating Social Security.

Written with a wit that echoes Frances Perkins’s own, award-winning journalist Kirstin Downey gives us a riveting exploration of how and why Perkins slipped into historical oblivion, and restores Perkins to her proper place in history.Book Description

Amazon Exclusive: Kirstin Downey on Frances Perkins

Housing prices had been pumped up by crazy new kinds of loans, and foreclosures of homes and farms were surging as borrowers faltered under the payments. Companies had enjoyed record profits and ploughed the money into machinery designed to boost productivity, cutting their workforces. The unemployment rate skyrocketed. Companies slashed the wages of the remaining workers, and asked them to work longer and longer hours. And then Wall Street imploded as the stock market crashed.

This was the scenario Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced as he entered the presidency in 1933.

An era of rampant speculation had come to an end. A women stepped in to put things right.

FDR turned to a long-time friend for guidance about how best to proceed, and asked her to join his Cabinet as Secretary of Labor. The middle-aged woman, a social worker named Frances Perkins, had spent a lifetime preparing for the job. She had studied economic boom and bust cycles, and knew they were a recurring pattern in modern industrial economies. She had a vision for how to blunt the worst of the hardship that American families were suffering, until business recovered again on its own.

She proposed a system of unemployment insurance, so that when workers lost their jobs through no fault of their own, they would have some income to keep their families fed while they looked for new jobs. Senior citizens had lost their life savings as real estate values fell and the stock market tumbled, and they needed some sort of income support, some kind of social security, when they grew too old to work. Employed people were stumbling under long work hours. She advocated the creation of a 40-hour workweek and a minimum wage. Companies were hiring teenagers instead of adults to save money, and she thought the time was ripe to place new restrictions on child labor.

“Nothing like this has ever been done in the United States before,” she told him. “You know that, don’t you?”

Within weeks she would head to Washington, D.C. by his side. The challenges they would face would be great. The conservative Supreme Court, businessmen, free-market ideologues and even some labor leaders would oppose them. They would try to block her work. They would argue that the poor should be left to fend for themselves. They would savage Frances’s reputation, they would eventually try to impeach her.

But she would not give up.

Frances Perkins, the first woman to take a position in the top tier of federal government, would succeed. The institutions she created would help future generations cope with the recurring economic downturns that she had predicted would come again. Her extraordinary achievements make her one of the most influential women of the twentieth century, one whose legacy should be widely celebrated. --Kirstin Downey

Review :
Gives a fully rounded portrait of this complex woman and makes a good case for her relevance in today's world
In this age when Presidential cabinet members come and go almost with the frequency of auto salesmen, several generations of politics watchers have grown up pretty much ignorant of the name Frances Perkins.

Her time in the national spotlight was brief --- the 12 years of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. As FDR's Secretary of Labor she was especially prominent during the years 1933-1940, when domestic concerns were on the front burner and she played a leading role in pushing for such causes as the Social Security Act, wage and hour laws, immigration reform, workplace safety, the right of workers to organize, pensions, welfare and old-age insurance. When World War II erupted, she was less often in the news but still active in matters like pushing for admission of Jewish refugees into the U.S. As the first woman ever to serve in a President's cabinet, she was subject to blatant sexist attitudes and scurrilous rumors not only from know-nothing outsiders but also from her own...
A fascinating, wonderful book about an important woman...
As an American History teacher high school teacher, all my texts include a sidebar, or mention of sorts, about Frances Perkins. This book exceeded all my expectations, and I found myself breathless (?) as I raced to read more! In fact, I almost had a sick feeling of what would have happened if I hadn't read this book, a kind of "near miss," for it is that good. For a history teacher of 20+ years, I count it in my top 5 books or educating me about a person's impact on history. Even after reading it, I went back and learned about how Downey sleuthed to find all the details about Perkins--a feat that allows us to understand an appreciate her subject's life.

The pivotal role of Perkins' accomplishments begins with her ties to the suffrage movement and crusade for better labor laws--as she herself said--"I'd rather have laws than a union." It highlights her close relationship with Florence Kelley, but also the New York of Tamany Hall, and the ins and outs of Albany politics...
I'm glad someone wrote this book
This book should have been written years ago. Really. Being Sec. of Labor for 13 years is a big deal and should be considered one. Unfortunately, Perkins is the butt of too many jokes in DC "in labor for 12 years and gave birth to nothing!" and that god-awful ugly building over 395.

It's great to think that we once had someone better versed in social work than a lawyer as Sec. of Labor. Washington had a heart back then.

The thing that bothered me about this book is that the author seems to have completely bought into the rivalry - albeit, one-sided - between Perkins and Eleanor Roosevelt. I don't think Eleanor was aware of it. And I don't think it was a rivalry until later in life. There was then and is now, room for two prominent women, not just one. I don't think a comparison between a bureaucrat and a First Lady is an apt one. It's as if Eleanor Roosevelt is a dragon this author must slay to reveal Perkins' contribution. They had a lot of things in...

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cynthia Eden spins a hot new paranormal Purgatory story with...DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

Eric Pate is used to making his own rules--as the director of the PARA Unit, he is the boss. Everyone rushes to obey his commands, and no one knows his secrets. No one ever gets too close to him. But then he meets her.

Ella Lancaster is tired of being a prisoner. She escaped one hell just to find herself in another, though Eric doesn't consider her containment with his agents as punishment. He actually thinks it is a form of protection. But Eric is so very wrong. Ella doesn't need protecting, not for anyone or anything.

When the PARA Unit comes under attack, Ella and Eric both find themselves battling a supernatural beast that they never expected. Forced to join forces, to make a deal, Ella and Eric are soon fighting side-by-side, and their attraction for each other can't be contained or controlled. Hot. Wild. Consuming. Ella's deal with her devil is soon taking over her life.

And as Eric falls deeper and deeper under the mysterious Ella's spell, his legendary control begins to crack. The beast that he has kept chained so carefully inside rises to the surface. Unfortunately, when the devil loses his control...there is real hell to pay.

Author's Note: All books in the Purgatory series are stand-alone titles. They are sexy paranormal romances full of hot alphas, dangerous times, and fierce heroines.

Review :
The idea of mates was belittled a lot.
I’m a giant fan of the 'Purgatory' series by Cynthia Eden, in fact, it’s probably my favorite series of hers. ‘Deal With The Devil’ is the fourth book in the series but each can be read as a standalone. Overall I’ve enjoyed them all. The first, ‘The Wolf Within’, was an okay read and opened up the series (this book is free), the two that followed, ‘Marked by the Vampire’ and ‘Charming the Beast’, stole my heart. I loved every part of them. As per this one, I’m not sure where I stand, I didn’t dislike it but I also didn’t love it.

Eric Pate is the director of the PARA unit, he makes all the rules and everyone follows his orders. He doesn’t let anyone too close because he hides who he really is: something that isn’t so human after all. Then Ella Lancaster crashes into his world and Eric’s legendary control starts to crack.

'Deal with the Devil’ opens up with...
Lots of Action and Scorching Hot Scenes
One of my Dirty Girls is a huge Cynthia Eden fan so when an ARC came up, I decided to give it a try. I was a bit worried about not having read the first three books in the Purgatory Series, but I caught on just fine.

I loved Ella and as her story unfolded it just tugged at my heart strings. I am a huge fan of strong heroines and alpha heroes. Ella definitely fit in the tough as nails category but I wish we had gotten to see more of her kicking rearend and taking names and less of Ella getting beaten up, grabbed, kidnapped etc etc.

Eric on the other hand didn't even make it to my like category for a good part of the story. His cause was definitely worthy, but his win at all costs attitude was kind of off-putting. He eventually grew on me and I ended up liking him overall but he's not going to make my favorite book boyfriend list.

There was plenty of action and some scorching hot scenes that made this book worthy of my time. I still really liked the...
4.5 stars-action, mystery, suspense, and romance
4.5 stars-- DEAL WITH THE DEVIL is the fourth installment in Cynthia Eden’s adult, contemporary Purgatory paranormal romance series. Purgatory is an island prison for the supernatural-those that cannot be controlled and are a danger to themselves and everyone else. This is PARA Unit director Eric Pate, and Ella Lancaster’s storyline. DEAL WITH THE DEVIL can be read as a stand alone but for background information and enjoyment, I suggest reading the series in order.

Told from alternating third person perspectives (Eric and Ella) DEAL WITH THE DEVIL follows the continued ‘imprisonment’ of Ella Lancaster, and the PARA Unit director’s explosive attraction to a woman whose species (or origins) is unknown. Ella ia a woman who had been imprisoned by a monster; for years she was tortured and abused, tested and retested, drained of blood and left to die. Someone or something was using Ella’s blood. Upon her ‘rescue’ Ella found she had...

Review :
Passable guide, but certainly not a reference book
A very brief and concise view of venture capital structures, but also somewhat basic in content. Examples could use more details (e.g., the sample weighted average anti-dilution calculations).
Disappointed that the author does not address more complicated security structures other than common and straight convertible preferred. Also, I was surprised given the recent publication date that there was not a comparison on how deal terms have changed from the dot-com boom and bust.
Certainly not a must have book for my bookshelf.
Sahlman's Entrepreneurial Venture is a much better "reference" book and cheaper too.

Very Disappointed
After enjoying his first book, Term Sheets and Valuations, I was looking forward to this one. I regret to say that I found it a big waste of time and a bigger waste of money.

It appears as if the marketing of the book by the pblisher sought to take advantage of his first book by raising the price by 500%, giving the impression that this book was better or more comprehensive. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Direct to the Deal Terms
This book has a few sample drafts of term sheets and other legal documents. That is not the primary focus of this book. You can hire that kind of talent (legal drafting) on a per hour basis. This book helps the owners make the BUSINESS decisions necessary to avoid hamstring their new venture during this difficult passage. Included is information about what to pay your independent directors, advisory board members and senior management. Also included is what percentage of the company the founders should expect to keep, how to avoid excessive dilution during an unfortunate down round and how to present your opportunity to potential investors. All of these BUSINESS decisions are beyond the discretion of attorneys in this area, they typically instruct the entrepreneur to reflect upon the topic and then the attorney will draft it to suit.
Wilmerding interviews individuals that are representative of players an entrepreneur will encounter in getting his business funded. These real world...

Review :
The Autobiography of a Businessman, Donald Trump
Trump: The Art of the Deal is painfully vain at times, but it's a decent book. I had a hard time getting into this book at first, but the this book gets better the more you read it. The chapter I liked best was the chapter about the USFL and Mr. Trump's purchase of the Generals and his experiences as a USFL owner. This book could be described as Donald Trump's personal and business autobiography co-authored with Tony Schwartz. .It's not a perfect book, but Donald Trump is a solid figure in America's business world and business history, which comes across crystal clear.

Five Stars
To read this book is to know the drive, accomplishments, and strong business acumen of The Donald.

If you like real estate or Donald Trump
I thought it was very interesting to see what Donald did on a day to day basis. I think this is a great read.

Negotiation is a big part of life - from buying a car or a house, taking a new job, or working out a serious conflict. Yet it's easy to believe we're usually at a disadvantage - that others are born negotiators, while we are not. Nothing could be further from the truth. Negotiation is a skill that just about everyone can learn to do well.

Presented by a master negotiator, these 24 lectures teach you how to approach all phases of a negotiation and deal with a wide range of problems. Professor Freeman shows you how to negotiate effectively in both competitive and collaborative situations. You learn the art of handling sharp tactics, haggling, psychological traps, and other challenges, while always being "hard on the problem and soft on the person" - which is the key to achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.

The course is organized around a mnemonic device, developed by Professor Freeman, that can serve in any negotiation situation. Called "I FORESAW IT," this indispensable framework guides you in assembling the strongest possible case, showing you how to evaluate such factors as creative options, independent criteria, and your best alternative to a negotiated agreement. Professor Freeman enriches his presentation with scores of fascinating anecdotes and case histories that vividly demonstrate what works and what doesn't when you sit down at the negotiating table.

Review :
Essential
Until this course, I generally shunned studying the topic of negotiation, assuming it was mainly about crass ways to manipulate people in order to get what you want. But we all routinely need to negotiate things big and small, and I generally trust the quality of courses from The Teaching Company, so I figured I'd try to be open minded and give this course a try.

I'm very glad I did! Having taught negotiation for a couple of decades, and gained plenty of firsthand negotiation experience himself, Seth Freeman does a great job. He gives us both academic rigor and practical methods, illustrates points with many examples, and is a very clear and engaging communicator. Most importantly, Freeman shows that negotiation isn't (or shouldn't be) about trying to take advantage of people, it's fundamentally about more effectively collaborating with people so that everyone is better off.

My summary of the main points:

(1) Do sufficient inquiry and research to...
Hugely useful
A huge audiobook packed with tons of useful information, tips, tricks, ideas. I'm sure if I could remember and apply even half of the ideas I'd end up being a far better negotiator.

This will likely need another listen or maybe several re-listens.

Negotiating Through Everyday Life
A person might think this if for business people learning how to manipulate others into buying their product. They would be wrong. Actually this course has benefits for people of all walks of life. Everyone negotiates. We have to. It is part of life. We negotiate our friendships, our marriages, our relationships as employers and as employees. We negotiate our salaries, our mortgages, how much we pay for all sorts of products. And this course is about how to negotiate effectively and fairly. It is good for consumers in that it alerts you to bullish negotiating tactics that strong arm you into buying things you don’t need or paying too much. It also teaches you why it is not best to negotiate in such a way that you get all you possibly could in a deal. It teaches you the dangers of developing a reputation of being greedy, and the benefits of developing a reputation for being generous and fair.
Some of the better things I have learned is thinking through your BATNA, or best...

The Art of the Deal by Donald J. Trump | Book Summary (BONUS INSIDE)

This book is an insightful journey about a man's life and how he achieved great success in his career up until that point. Donald Trump was a young entrepreneur entwined in many controversies, but knew (and still knows) how to use these controversies to his own benefit. He has always been skilled at living large and doesn’t take no for an answer. This book gives you inside knowledge and inspiration on how to make a deal successfully. This book is actually more of an autobiography than a “how to” or self-help book. It is an interesting view of the past, a long look at the mogul on his way to becoming America’s most famous businessman. This is a boastful, boyishly disarming, thoroughly engaging personal history, which offers an inside look at aspects of financing, development, and construction in big-time New York real estate.

This is the best analysis on the book so far. The key points of closing a sale is well defined. Donald Trump himself writes straight forwardly what he knows and how he wants to communicate that. The writer has done a great job by being highly thoughtful when summarizing. This summary could almost have been written by him except that the bombast he loves has been left out. It is very easy to read and practical book.

Awesome overview about the insightful journey of Donald J. Trump. Well written summary.
This summary book is outstanding and well written. Inside of this book I have found a well written discussion and summary about the insightful journey of Donald J. Trump. My college friend suggested me about his book a few days ago and he also told me about the discussion quality of this book. I purchased this book last week and by reading this book I am impressed. This is actually more of an autobiography and fully engaged with personal history. By reading this book i have understood about how to make a deal successfully. You will find lots of information and lesson inside of this book. I will definitely recommend this book to all.

It is indeed an art.
We all know who Donald Trump is. Aside from politics, this man is entrepreneur.
Most of the time, the best teacher is experience and one inspiring experience for me is the journey through entrepreneurship despite the controversies he was into.It is indeed an art.

Review :
Great Sales Course, Refreshingly Different
Having been in sales for 15 years, and going through many corporate training programs (Miller-Heiman, SPIN selling, Achieve Global, etc) I found this 8 CD course to be refreshingly unique and of great value.

Several years ago my company sponsored a one day sales training workshop by a Sandler Sales franchisee. The trainer spent 8 hours talking, quickly flipping from page to page in the (photocopied) manual provided. He actually skipped over a lot of the material in the manual and rambled on for an entire day. As much as I had looked forward to learning the "Sandler System", I was truly dissapointed and could not wait for the day to end.

What I learned was this: the training you get from a Sandler Sales franchisee is only as good as that individual trainer. Some I'm sure are top-notch. The one we had was not so good.

In my opinion, this 8 audio CD program by Nightingale-Conant is FAR more valuable than the workshop I participated in by a Sandler...
Sandler has some great insights and a negative attitude
This multi-cd sales training package was mixed. The positive aspects are that has some great insightful suggestions on closing deals, winning business, and having a positive self image. The other side of it is that much of the language is negative, and if a sales person spoke as David Sandler suggests, it is likely the customer would not like that sales person. Even listening to the CDs, I had to choose not to let myself dislike David Sandler, so that I would be able to get any good suggestions that he might make. If you can get past the negativity, there are some good suggestions mentioned on these CDs. A better suggestion might be to get Zig Zigglars "Secrets of Closing the Sale", or Chet Holmes' "Ultimate Sales Machine".

Surprisingly effective, unconventional sales system
This program has easily been worth over $250,000 for me. When you first listen to it, you may be shocked or even turned off. David Sandler (who died in 1995) could come across as abrasive at times. Also, the methods he suggests are unconventional. Among other controversial techniques, he recommends that you go negative with the prospective customer. If the customer says, "That price sounds kind of high," you respond with, "Oh. Sounds like there's no way you're going to be doing business with us, then."

It sounded bizarre to me ... until I tested it one day on a new prospective client, and it worked. Less than a month later, I had a new client (I'm a consultant) who paid me $100,000 that year.

Sandler's methods have been field tested and been remarkably successful. Even though he died in 1995, there are Sandler Sales Training offices located throughout the country today.

The CD series includes segments from many live seminars given by David...

Friction Control Toolkit
Here's a gem that delivers practical help on those annoying people in your life and what to do about them. How do you perceive other people--and how do they perceive you? If you dislike all systems that put people in a "box," then you should also disregard your own system of first impressions--it's likely inaccurate. This book will help.

About 20 years ago, I heard Peter Drucker counsel ministry leaders on conflict resolution. He said inter-personal conflict and friction at work was inevitable--we're working with people. The bigger issue, he said, was to have systems in place for dealing with conflict. Is conflict resolution part of your team's toolkit? Or, is it stuffed way down where no one deals with it?

Survey your team and see how many have read a book, attended a workshop, or been thoughtfully mentored on conflict resolution. Bob Phillips and Kimberly Alyn have written a practical and indispensable Conflict Resolution 101 book--and it's fun to...
We are all annoying!
This book brings forth a simple, but powerful revelation: we are all annoying to someone! Rather than putting people into categories of what's wrong with certain people, this book helps one to see different personality types. The book then looks at how different personality types have difficulty interacting. It also looks at how differnt personalities interact well. The book discusses how to get along with other personality types based on one's own personality type. It doesn't focus on changing people's personalities, but focuses on how to work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and just get along! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to try to work on getting along with others without (pointlessly) trying to change anyone.

Not really what I expected...
I wish I had seen some of the reveiws about this book's religious nature. The author is not heavy handed in his approach, rather unable to understand the fact that not everybody has read the Bibile back to back. There are several sections where I was simply reading the words to get to the next non-religious section. It is absolutely useless for me to read examples based on passages in the bible or working in/attending a church because I don't do either of these things. Each chapter has a little quote as a subtitle and I count 10 of the 30 being directly from the bible. I probably would not have bought the book if I had read a more accurate reveiw of the material. I am about halfway through, and will finish it... but I cannot help but write comments in this book as I pass through the more obtuse sections.

Thirty days and thirty nights

Ashley Jones has been sitting in Sebastian Cruz's office. For hours. Behind the imposing wooden doors sits the man who stole her family's island home. And she wants it back.

But the fight is knocked from her when Ashley recognizes him as the man she knows intimately—the man who betrayed her after their blissful night together.

Sebastian has no intention of giving the island back, but he does want Ashley. He agrees to her deal, but has a few sub-clauses of his own. Specifically, a month at his beck and call—and in his bed!

Review :
Truth Challenged Hero Needs Kick On Shin
This is a hero who should have been very sympathetic. His father was cheated out of his home and left with his family in dire straits. The hero loses his father young and works endlessly to rebuild the family fortunes and take care of his mother and siblings. Worried that he is about to lose his mother to heart disease, he sets about regaining the home and the key it is located on to give her peace of mind. So far, so good. Where he goes wrong is that he is willing to pull any dirty trick to regain it; and, since the man who hurt his family is dead and beyond his retribution, he instead punishes the heroine for the crime of being her father's daughter.

The heroine, while not without her own problems, has had a very bad childhood in the unhappy home of her natural father and her mother, who was never able to get the man who fathered her child to marry her. In the wake of her mother killing her lover, the heroine's fathe, and committing suicide; she has retreated to the...
A very sensual read! - 4.5 stars
A Deal with Benefits was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a sappy romance but it wasn’t. It was a very emotional and heartbreaking read. I felt connected to both characters and felt their pain. In one moment I liked Sebastian and in the next I despised him for what he was doing. I wish he went about it another way without putting Ashley in the middle of it, but if he did that then they wouldn’t have met. Everything that happened was believable and you could see it happening in real life. Heck it does happen in real life, I assume some people have mistresses. It was devastating when we learn of Ashley’s parents. It was hard to read about them and what Ashley had to witness. So when she agrees to Sebastian’s terms to become what she always said she wouldn’t become and what she despises, a mistress. Ashley’s and Sebastian’s relationship wasn’t an easy one. Ashley desires Sebastian but knows not to fall in love with him...
A Quite Delightful Read
I believe this is the first book that I have read by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect. I actually quite liked the book. The Hero has his own back story which evolves naturally over time. The Heroine had a childhood that she despised and had sworn to never behave like or end up like her mother. When Ashley first meets Sebastian he seems like a wonderful person. They sleep together but she is so shocked by the strength of her feelings and how she behaved with him, she basically kicks him out of bed. He wants to continue on and she says no. This spells the end of his weekend on the island. Sebastian is one of the most truth-challenged characters I've run across in a while. He believes that he is within his rights to be deceitful to Ashley and remains so through the majority of the book. She later finds out what he was up to and is understandably livid. She goes to Miami to confront him and one thing leads to another and she ends up agreeing to be his mistress for four...

In 2000, after the Tribune Company acquired Times Mirror Corporation, it comprised the most powerful collection of newspapers in the world. How then did Tribune nosedive into bankruptcy and public scandal? In The Deal From Hell, veteran Tribune and Los Angeles Times editor James O'Shea takes us behind the scenes of the decisions that led to disaster in boardrooms and newsrooms from coast to coast, based on access to key players, court testimony, and sworn depositions.

The Deal From Hell is a riveting narrative that chronicles how news industry executives and editors--convinced they were acting in the best interests of their publications--made a series of flawed decisions that endangered journalistic credibility and drove the newspapers, already confronting a perfect storm of political, technological, economic, and social turmoil, to the brink of extinction.

Review :
He's right. I was there.
James O'Shea has filled in the blanks on what I know to be true. I was a long-time employee of The Times and witnessed many of the disgraces that Tribune and Zell put us through. Perhaps those who find it difficult to follow have a hard time jumping from one newspaper culture to another but believe me, having a "strange" culture thrust upon yours is also very, very difficult. Yes, the first thing Tribune did was get rid of the people in HR and vow to "change the culture." They did indeed change it, they demoralized, deflated and beat it down. The employees as a group went from being in love with their company to being in mourning for it.

The problems for newspapers as O'Shea outlines are true, to which I would add that the American public has lost a great deal of its intelligence and is happy with "headlines." (I would refer you to another book, "Idiot America.")

Sam Zell and his clowns were every bit as disgusting as O'Shea claims. I saw them give their...
5-Star......Final!
Newspapers are about "the truth."
This book about newspapers seems like it's adapted from "The Twilight Zone."
And that's not a good thing for the people involved.
For those of us who still love newspapers, this is a must-read.
I trust the reportage from author O'Shea......his straight-forward style makes it a breezy read....even though I have no real concept behind the financial machinations that allowed this deal to happen.
We moved to Los Angeles in 1966, and since then, I doubt I've missed more than a handful of editions of The Times.
In the good old days, I couldn't wait to read Jim Murray, Jack Smith, Paul Conrad and the Wizard of Id.
Now, I wince each morning when I remove the paper from the plastic bag, fearing some new degradation to the product.
(I love the writers, editors and reporters, who despite the odds, put out the daily miracle).
But O'Shea's premise that newspapers are beholden to the community and not the stockholders...
Shareholder Greed & Management Incompetence: A Deadly Combination
James O'Shea had a ringside seat at the Chicago Tribune and then the Los Angeles Times as incompetent executives and greedy stockholders -- few of them with any clue how newspaper journalism really works -- sucked the lifeblood out of them in tragic mergers, which affected other newspapers, including the Baltimore Sun where I worked for 43 years.

Then came Sam Zell, a real estate mogul who knew even less about newspapers, who bought the Tribune Company, which included the Times-Mirror chain, the Chicago Cubs and a bunch of smaller newspapers and some TV stations for a pile of money he didn't have.

Zell appointed the equivalent of journalistic idiots, led by a former shock jock, to run his new newspaper empire. And run it they have, into bankruptcy and damn near into the ground.

The incompetence of the Zell management team combined with the loss of advertising to new electronic media, has crippled once-proud and prestigious newspapers and left them...

This is an excellent book for young students to learn how to comparative shop ...
Gabriel glanced at the television and spotted a commercial for Fast Kids sneakers. Yeah, those would be perfect for the up and coming race at school. “The next school race is coming up on Friday,” he began to tell his Mom. “Can I get some Fast Kids shoes?” It would be really cool to race like a cheetah and win that race. Gabriel’s shoes no longer fit properly and no way he could win that race “with shoes that pinch.” He began to check online to see if there were any, but the with his Mom’s $30.00 limit and the shipping, it wasn’t going to work.

Gabriel had to think about that $10.00 shipping and knew that he wouldn’t have enough money to get the Fast Kids online. It was off to Mr. Smith’s Shoe Store to see if they had any Fast Kids in stock. They sure did, but they didn’t like the “$38.00 price tag.” No, there wasn’t time to wait for Mr. Smith’s sale so Gabriel had to...

Good story, but drops the ball in the end
Alan is working undercover as a freelance writer researching the Vancouver film industry. His ultimate goal is to find the culprit beyond industrial espionage at one of the production companies, with ties to organized crime. He soon finds himself attracted to his landlord Jillian, who is also the star of a science fiction TV series whose production company is the subject of his clandestine investigation. Someone is out to steal technology, and is willing to kill for it. As Alan delves deeper into his investigation and the lives of the people in his rooming house, he can't help but fall for Jillian, despite her strict no sleepover policy. Her best friend Amanda is enjoying watching Jillian squirm as she deals with these new feelings.

Though billed as the second story in the Goddard series, Amanda and geeky husband Simon appeared in Monroe's earlier novel "The Real Deal." Monroe packs on the passion and tells an interesting a entertaining story but the industrial espionage...

Didn't Live Up To My Expectations
Actress Jillian Sinclair first appeared as the heroine Amanda's best friend in one of my all-time favorite romances - The Real Deal - so I couldn't wait to read about her finding true love with undercover agent Alan Hyatt. Alas, Deal With This did not live up to my expectations.

Alan Hyatt is undercover in Vancouver as a reporter in order to investigate pirated technology involving person or persons working on a syndicated SF series starring none other than former soap opera actress Jillian Sinclair. Because the show doesn't pay all that well, she also owns and runs, in a very "only in romanceland" manner, a boarding house lived in by many of those who also work on the show. Which is why Alan, of course becomes a boarder.

When Alan learns that Jillian is besties with Amanda, she becomes suspect number one, because, of course, Amanda's husband Simon is a high tech guru. But that doesn't stop the sexual chemistry from sizzling between the two. Jillian is a heroine...
