Negotiation is a big part of life - from buying a car or a house, taking a new job, or working out a serious conflict. Yet it's easy to believe we're usually at a disadvantage - that others are born negotiators, while we are not. Nothing could be further from the truth. Negotiation is a skill that just about everyone can learn to do well.

Presented by a master negotiator, these 24 lectures teach you how to approach all phases of a negotiation and deal with a wide range of problems. Professor Freeman shows you how to negotiate effectively in both competitive and collaborative situations. You learn the art of handling sharp tactics, haggling, psychological traps, and other challenges, while always being "hard on the problem and soft on the person" - which is the key to achieving a mutually beneficial outcome.

The course is organized around a mnemonic device, developed by Professor Freeman, that can serve in any negotiation situation. Called "I FORESAW IT," this indispensable framework guides you in assembling the strongest possible case, showing you how to evaluate such factors as creative options, independent criteria, and your best alternative to a negotiated agreement. Professor Freeman enriches his presentation with scores of fascinating anecdotes and case histories that vividly demonstrate what works and what doesn't when you sit down at the negotiating table.

Review :
Essential
Until this course, I generally shunned studying the topic of negotiation, assuming it was mainly about crass ways to manipulate people in order to get what you want. But we all routinely need to negotiate things big and small, and I generally trust the quality of courses from The Teaching Company, so I figured I'd try to be open minded and give this course a try.

I'm very glad I did! Having taught negotiation for a couple of decades, and gained plenty of firsthand negotiation experience himself, Seth Freeman does a great job. He gives us both academic rigor and practical methods, illustrates points with many examples, and is a very clear and engaging communicator. Most importantly, Freeman shows that negotiation isn't (or shouldn't be) about trying to take advantage of people, it's fundamentally about more effectively collaborating with people so that everyone is better off.

My summary of the main points:

(1) Do sufficient inquiry and research to...
Hugely useful
A huge audiobook packed with tons of useful information, tips, tricks, ideas. I'm sure if I could remember and apply even half of the ideas I'd end up being a far better negotiator.

This will likely need another listen or maybe several re-listens.

Negotiating Through Everyday Life
A person might think this if for business people learning how to manipulate others into buying their product. They would be wrong. Actually this course has benefits for people of all walks of life. Everyone negotiates. We have to. It is part of life. We negotiate our friendships, our marriages, our relationships as employers and as employees. We negotiate our salaries, our mortgages, how much we pay for all sorts of products. And this course is about how to negotiate effectively and fairly. It is good for consumers in that it alerts you to bullish negotiating tactics that strong arm you into buying things you don’t need or paying too much. It also teaches you why it is not best to negotiate in such a way that you get all you possibly could in a deal. It teaches you the dangers of developing a reputation of being greedy, and the benefits of developing a reputation for being generous and fair.
Some of the better things I have learned is thinking through your BATNA, or best...

Friends. You gotta have 'em, but sometimes they drive you crazy. You love 'em, but sometimes they make you mad. They'll help you through a crisis...unless they are the crisis.

So What's the Deal?

Friends are more than just the people you hang out with. They make you laugh, they keep your secrets, they offer advice (some good, some bad), they give you a shoulder to cry on. Sometimes they move away, or betray your trust, or flake out, but mostly they are the people who are always there for you. And they know you'll be there when they need you most. Because that's what it means to be a friend.

Sometimes friendship is overwhelming, sometimes it's confusing, sometimes you feel like you don't have a friend in the world, but don't worry, it's like that for everyone. That's what the stories in this book are all about. They're from real teens, and they're about the bizarre, difficult and wonderful things that really happened to them and their friends. Put that together with weird facts, cool graphics, fun advice and quizzes designed to help you figure out what you and your friends are all about, and you've got the real deal on friendship!Friends. Review :
GREAT BOOKS!
Chicken Soup the Real Deal: Friends

I just recently read Chicken Soup the Real Deal: Friends. This book is a very good book. It tells many stories of people who are really close to others, or have had a problem with friends in the past. I think that Chicken Soup books are very easy to read, it also doesn't take long to read them if you can relate to the stories in them. I have always loved reading these books. I think you'll really enjoy the stories. I guess I like them because it just makes me feel happy knowing that other people besides me get embarrassed too, and they always cheer me up knowing that the stories in these are real and not stories that the authors make up. I think that most people who do read these books really do enjoy reading them. If you like to read about other people's lives you should try a Chicken Soup book. These books are very good books. I urge you to read them!

loved it
I really loved this book. I like reading the kind of books where other people tell there story and you can relate to it. thats why i realy love this book because all of the story;s you can totally relate to and it has stories that are just like the real life and high scchool and the things you go through every day. When i read this book it helped me like deal with things because it had like stories and poems of things i would be going through right then and to know like other kids go through them too and like all friends can be the same. I always enjoy these books and when i read them i cant put them down.

Great Holiday Gift!!
I saw this book listed as one of Barnes and Nobles holiday gift ideas... and it is! I got several copies for all my friends who have teenagers (and for my teenage niece and nephews). The book does a wonderful job of getting the teenagers point of view across through the personal stories, reflections and interviews. It's not an adult's idea of what today's teenage experience is all about (let's face it, many of us are long past that trying time) but approaches it from their point of view and articulates in a readable entertaining format for adults and teens. Another great addition to this terrific series.

These days, many mothers-to-be find themselves torn between the desire for a natural childbirth with minimal medical intervention and the peace of mind offered by instant access to life-saving technology that only a hospital can provide. In Natural Hospital Birth, doula Cynthia Gabriel asserts that there is no good reason that women in North America should not be able to have both. She shows expectant mothers what they can do to avoid unnecessary medical interventions and how to take initiative and consciously prepare for the kind of birth they want to have. Also included are inspiring stories from other women who know firsthand that natural birth in the hospital is possible. With this book, mothers-to-be will be equipped with the knowledge they need to ensure a satisfying hospital birth that they will look back on with peace and joy.

Review :
hesitant to commit to natural birth? read this book!
Where to begin?? I have one child and am expecting another in a few months. My first labor and delivery was not natural by any means. It was a very typical American hospital birth with plenty of intervention. I didn't find the experience particularly empowering at all. When I found out I was pregnant this time, I started considering the idea of a natural birth. I really didn't think I could do it. My OB said things like "just be flexible, you might change your mind" and "you don't have to be a hero." I doubted my ability to do it without drugs!

Funny that once I picked up this book, I saw Cynthia Gabriel mentioning some of these exact comments I got from my OB as a sign that one's provider was not open or supportive of natural birth. As I read the book, I became more empowered and confident that I could in fact have a natural labor and delivery. And as I was re-reading the book in my 7th month of pregnancy, I decided that I wouldn't have it any other way and set out to...
Best chance to have exactly what the title describes - read this book!
As an L&D nurse, turned doula, turned CNM-to-be, I was skeptical about this book to say the least. I've worked in some of the most medicalized environments you can find in the childbirth world, and I know first-hand all the tricks the hospital staff will use to accomplish their goals while potentially robbing the mother of her own. The terms "natural", "hospital", and "childbirth" don't belong in the same sentence with what I've seen in my experiences over the past 8 years. I'm not sure what I expected this book to be, but I'll say I was so very pleasantly surprised. As I begin my midwifery training, I'll say for full disclosure's sake, I want to work as far away from a hospital (theoretically, not physically) as I can. However, this book is a great tool for women who do still desire to give birth in a hospital but without unnecessary medical interventions. Granted, once you set foot in a hospital, there is a decent risk that things might be done to you that you don't want, but this...
Extremely disappointed
I had high hopes for this book after seeing all of the positive reviews, but as I read this book I went from feeling a little disappointed to being almost angry at the book by the end. I am a birth doula and I bought this book in hopes of picking up some ideas to help my clients who want/have to have hospital births and still want natural births. I didn't get that at all- and I would even go so far as to recommend that the mommas NOT read this book. I'll try to use some quotes from this book to illustrate what I didn't like.

The first thing I took issue with is the overall tone of this book. Basically it says that in order to get a natural birth in a hospital you just have to stand your ground, tell the doctors that you want a natural birth, and keep asking for "one more hour". This may work well if the staff really is pushing for interventions based on scheduling, doctor preference, etc (as does happen unfortunately), but what about situations where there really is a...

Hawaiian Puff-Wheels

My daughter loves finding these in her lunchbox. She says they are fancy and delicious. The variations are endless, so this one recipe can yield many happy lunchboxes for years to come.

Yield

4 or 5 servings.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the pastry sheets. Spread the ham and pineapple evenly over both sheets. Sprinkle with the cheese. Carefully roll the dough, starting with the long side so that you end up with a long log. Cut the filled dough into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pieces, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the dough rises and is golden. Remove from the oven, and allow the wheels to cool for 5 minutes prior to packing in a lunchbox. If you make these the night before, pack them chilled in the lunchbox. They will be room temperature by lunch.

Ingredients
  • 1 package (17 ounces, or 490 g) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 3/4 cup (112 g) sliced deli ham, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) crushed pineapple, well drained
  • 1 1/4 cups (145 g) shredded Cheddar cheese

Real Food, Real Fun, Real Easy
Laura Fuentes takes the hum drum out of school lunches with this book. There are no strange ingredients that you can't find at the grocery store. You don't have to have all those expensive kitchen tools and feel guilty if you don't cut your sandwiches into cute stars or anything. Using these recipes, lunch can be fun AND easy!

Everything is laid out in a clear, concise manner. There is a little intro telling you where the idea for each recipe originated, giving them a personal touch that I find appealing. At the end of the book, I was surprised to find a chart with the recipe names and a place for kids to rate each one. Pure. Genius. Now I can easily see which ones were favorites and we can mark whether we want to make it again or not. Getting the kids involved in planning lunches is SO KEY.

I am a homeschooling mom of 3, and I would get to a point in the day where I would stare at the refrigerator and say "what am I going to give these kids for...

Looks awesome.. but I'm clueless on some things!
Got this book yesterday... and loving all the recipes I see! So excited to try them!

My only comment is that I would like to have seen a comment(1-3 sentences) per each recipe regarding instructions how to freeze/defost/pack (especially the sandwiches).

How do the avocados not turn brown and mushy after all morning in the lunchbox? How do the apple slices not turn brown? I'm really clueless about that stuff:)

Everything else look beautiful and wonderful! Looking forward to the next book!
