“Kirstin Downey’s lively, substantive and—dare I say—inspiring new biography of Perkins . . . not only illuminates Perkins’ career but also deepens the known contradictions of Roosevelt’s character.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR Fresh Air

One of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s closest friends and the first female secretary of labor, Perkins capitalized on the president’s political savvy and popularity to enact most of the Depression-era programs that are today considered essential parts of the country’s social safety network.

Frances Perkins is no longer a household name, yet she was one of the most influential women of the twentieth century. Based on eight years of research, extensive archival materials, new documents, and exclusive access to Perkins’s family members and friends, this biography is the first complete portrait of a devoted public servant with a passionate personal life, a mother who changed the landscape of American business and society.

Frances Perkins was named Secretary of Labor by Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. As the first female cabinet secretary, she spearheaded the fight to improve the lives of America’s working people while juggling her own complex family responsibilities. Perkins’s ideas became the cornerstones of the most important social welfare and legislation in the nation’s history, including unemployment compensation, child labor laws, and the forty-hour work week.

Arriving in Washington at the height of the Great Depression, Perkins pushed for massive public works projects that created millions of jobs for unemployed workers. She breathed life back into the nation’s labor movement, boosting living standards across the country. As head of the Immigration Service, she fought to bring European refugees to safety in the United States. Her greatest triumph was creating Social Security.

Written with a wit that echoes Frances Perkins’s own, award-winning journalist Kirstin Downey gives us a riveting exploration of how and why Perkins slipped into historical oblivion, and restores Perkins to her proper place in history.Book Description

Amazon Exclusive: Kirstin Downey on Frances Perkins

Housing prices had been pumped up by crazy new kinds of loans, and foreclosures of homes and farms were surging as borrowers faltered under the payments. Companies had enjoyed record profits and ploughed the money into machinery designed to boost productivity, cutting their workforces. The unemployment rate skyrocketed. Companies slashed the wages of the remaining workers, and asked them to work longer and longer hours. And then Wall Street imploded as the stock market crashed.

This was the scenario Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced as he entered the presidency in 1933.

An era of rampant speculation had come to an end. A women stepped in to put things right.

FDR turned to a long-time friend for guidance about how best to proceed, and asked her to join his Cabinet as Secretary of Labor. The middle-aged woman, a social worker named Frances Perkins, had spent a lifetime preparing for the job. She had studied economic boom and bust cycles, and knew they were a recurring pattern in modern industrial economies. She had a vision for how to blunt the worst of the hardship that American families were suffering, until business recovered again on its own.

She proposed a system of unemployment insurance, so that when workers lost their jobs through no fault of their own, they would have some income to keep their families fed while they looked for new jobs. Senior citizens had lost their life savings as real estate values fell and the stock market tumbled, and they needed some sort of income support, some kind of social security, when they grew too old to work. Employed people were stumbling under long work hours. She advocated the creation of a 40-hour workweek and a minimum wage. Companies were hiring teenagers instead of adults to save money, and she thought the time was ripe to place new restrictions on child labor.

“Nothing like this has ever been done in the United States before,” she told him. “You know that, don’t you?”

Within weeks she would head to Washington, D.C. by his side. The challenges they would face would be great. The conservative Supreme Court, businessmen, free-market ideologues and even some labor leaders would oppose them. They would try to block her work. They would argue that the poor should be left to fend for themselves. They would savage Frances’s reputation, they would eventually try to impeach her.

But she would not give up.

Frances Perkins, the first woman to take a position in the top tier of federal government, would succeed. The institutions she created would help future generations cope with the recurring economic downturns that she had predicted would come again. Her extraordinary achievements make her one of the most influential women of the twentieth century, one whose legacy should be widely celebrated. --Kirstin Downey

Review :
Gives a fully rounded portrait of this complex woman and makes a good case for her relevance in today's world
In this age when Presidential cabinet members come and go almost with the frequency of auto salesmen, several generations of politics watchers have grown up pretty much ignorant of the name Frances Perkins.

Her time in the national spotlight was brief --- the 12 years of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. As FDR's Secretary of Labor she was especially prominent during the years 1933-1940, when domestic concerns were on the front burner and she played a leading role in pushing for such causes as the Social Security Act, wage and hour laws, immigration reform, workplace safety, the right of workers to organize, pensions, welfare and old-age insurance. When World War II erupted, she was less often in the news but still active in matters like pushing for admission of Jewish refugees into the U.S. As the first woman ever to serve in a President's cabinet, she was subject to blatant sexist attitudes and scurrilous rumors not only from know-nothing outsiders but also from her own...
A fascinating, wonderful book about an important woman...
As an American History teacher high school teacher, all my texts include a sidebar, or mention of sorts, about Frances Perkins. This book exceeded all my expectations, and I found myself breathless (?) as I raced to read more! In fact, I almost had a sick feeling of what would have happened if I hadn't read this book, a kind of "near miss," for it is that good. For a history teacher of 20+ years, I count it in my top 5 books or educating me about a person's impact on history. Even after reading it, I went back and learned about how Downey sleuthed to find all the details about Perkins--a feat that allows us to understand an appreciate her subject's life.

The pivotal role of Perkins' accomplishments begins with her ties to the suffrage movement and crusade for better labor laws--as she herself said--"I'd rather have laws than a union." It highlights her close relationship with Florence Kelley, but also the New York of Tamany Hall, and the ins and outs of Albany politics...
I'm glad someone wrote this book
This book should have been written years ago. Really. Being Sec. of Labor for 13 years is a big deal and should be considered one. Unfortunately, Perkins is the butt of too many jokes in DC "in labor for 12 years and gave birth to nothing!" and that god-awful ugly building over 395.

It's great to think that we once had someone better versed in social work than a lawyer as Sec. of Labor. Washington had a heart back then.

The thing that bothered me about this book is that the author seems to have completely bought into the rivalry - albeit, one-sided - between Perkins and Eleanor Roosevelt. I don't think Eleanor was aware of it. And I don't think it was a rivalry until later in life. There was then and is now, room for two prominent women, not just one. I don't think a comparison between a bureaucrat and a First Lady is an apt one. It's as if Eleanor Roosevelt is a dragon this author must slay to reveal Perkins' contribution. They had a lot of things in...

***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTELLER***

An essential exploration of why and how women’s sexuality works—based on groundbreaking research and brain science—that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy.

Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a “pink pill” for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never be the answer—but as a result of the research that’s gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women’s sexuality works than we ever thought possible, and Come as You Are explains it all.

The first lesson in this essential, transformative book by Dr. Emily Nagoski is that every woman has her own unique sexuality, like a fingerprint, and that women vary more than men in our anatomy, our sexual response mechanisms, and the way our bodies respond to the sexual world. So we never need to judge ourselves based on others’ experiences. Because women vary, and that’s normal.

Second lesson: sex happens in a context. And all the complications of everyday life influence the context surrounding a woman’s arousal, desire, and orgasm.

Cutting-edge research across multiple disciplines tells us that the most important factor for women in creating and sustaining a fulfilling sex life, is not what you do in bed or how you do it, but how you feel about it. Which means that stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it. Once you understand these factors, and how to influence them, you can create for yourself better sex and more profound pleasure than you ever thought possible.

And Emily Nagoski can prove it.

Review :
The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.
Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. My favorite part of the book was learning about how the brain interprets goals and effort, and how...
Please, read this book.
If you read only one book on human sexuality, make it Come as You Are. This isn't your standard sex book. There are no promises here that learning one trick will drive you or your lover wild. But there is a lot of science, presented in an approachable manner, that provides great insight into how people work sexually (and, to be honest, in general as well). The book's stated audience is women, but I think anyone can benefit from the science that Nagoski covers in her book, regardless of sex. Sure, if you are a guy you'll read some things that don't directly apply to you, but I recommend you read this book anyway. It is that important.

Why? Because what this book teaches you is immently important to your health, your sexual well being, and just general understanding of how you, and those you are intimate with, work. For instance, Nagoski's discussion of the dual control model, or the "brakes" and "accelerator" of arousal, provides an understanding of people...
Magnificent!
This is an astonishingly good book - written with warmth, wisdom, humor, and heart. Although it's designed to be a self-help book for the general public, I have a suspicion its greater value will be in the fresh and original ideas it will offer to sex therapists. I look forward to using some of Nagoski's assessment, education, and treatment techniques in my own sex therapy practice. The book is also a cornucopia of clinically relevant behavioral science research. I believe many sex clinicians will find themselves returning to it again and again for inspiration and guidance. Well done!

Review :
WOW!!!!!! This is a must read.
Here is the deal I am a functional medicine doctor and have studied 1000's of hours on this topic and functional medicine in general. This book has brought new research that I have never heard of and I study and read daily.... She write things in a simple manner and she has a great sense of humor. The truth is if you are suffering with a thyroid condition or think you have a thyroid condition even though your doctor said "your labs are normal and your on the correct thyroid meds, so it's in your head and here is a prescription for Prozac". I would slap him or her and tell them they need to spend some time keeping up with the research and read this book I just read. YOU CAN GET HELP. The first step is getting yourself educated. This book will do that. If your doctor is unfamiliar with these protocols in this book, find a new doctor that is proficient in functional medicine. There are to many people that WANT and DEMAND REAL answers for their problems. When you read...
Beg your doctors to read this book.
Ok, so now I understand how and why I've struggled the way I have for 20 years, is it too much to ask that the medical field catch up? This book needs to be in the hands of every doctor who has ever prescribed a thyroid medication. I wish I could turn back the clock and read this in my 20s when I first started hypothyroid issues. Unfortunately, my thyroid health deteriorated year after year until it was finally burnt out, massive and cancerous. It has been removed but there was little to no support for how to handle what that has left me with, which is pretty much every symptom on the hypothyroid list... not to worry, though, my TSH level is "normal". Please read this book if you struggle with hypothyroid or Hashimoto's. Please read this book if you love someone with these issues. And please read this book if you have sworn an oath to "do no harm" and help heal others in a medical profession.

Skeptical, but the results made me a BELIEVER!
I was suffering from many of the symptoms the author describes in her book and was spending a fortune on a long list of prescriptions. Nothing seemed to help! I still felt like crap, the side effects nearly made me homebound but...I'M IMPROVING! I credit my journey back to good health to the profound information contained in this book. Working with my doctor, we came to find how right Suzy Cohen is! I now take only 2 prescription meds along with natural vitamins and supplements (Thyroscript being one of them). I have control of my life back!!! And alot more money to spend on other things. The info in this book is priceless and I am so grateful that someone, like this author, took the time to advise the rest of us that there IS an answer, there is a solution and a better way!!! I recommend this book to every single person I talk to because if you don't have an issue with these things, you certainly know someone who does! I received this book as a gift and quite honestly, it gave me the...

Would you like to understand the deeper spiritual meaning of physical illness, parenting handicapped children, drug addiction, alcoholism, the death of a loved one, accidents, deafness, and blindness?

Your Soul’s Plan (which was originally published under the title Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth?) explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, before we are born for the purpose of spiritual growth. Through compelling profiles of people who knowingly planned the experiences mentioned above, Your Soul’s Plan shows that suffering is not purposeless, but rather imbued with deep meaning. Working with four gifted mediums, author Robert Schwartz reveals the significance of each person’s life plan and allows us a fascinating look into the “other side.”

Each personal story focuses on a specific life challenge, organized by type for easy reference. Accessible both to those familiar with the metaphysical aspects of spirituality and to the general reader, the moving narratives that comprise Your Soul’s Plan help readers awaken to the reality that they are transcendent, eternal souls. With this stirring book as a guide, feelings of anger, resentment, guilt, and victimization are healed and transformed into acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and peace.

Robert Schwartz is also the author of Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born, which explores the pre-birth planning of spiritual awakening, miscarriage, abortion, caregiving, abusive relationships, sexuality, incest, adoption, poverty, suicide, rape, and mental illness. There’s also a chapter about the pre-birth planning we do with our future pets.

Review :
For me, the most healing book I have read.
What can I say in description of a book that has had more healing impact in my life than any I have read in a lifetime of 62 years? As a lifetime professional counselor, I have read and studied many books focused on the prospect of healing, but Robert Schwartz's Your Soul's Plan brought the events of my life more into focus than any I have read. I say this, not only as a healer, but also as a Vietnam Veteran, ex-helicopter ambulance pilot with a lifetime of challenge to overcome my own legacy of suffering.

Arranged in a series of case histories, tied together by the theme that there is an overarching life plan, planned pre-birth at a soul-level, we are made aware of how our own lives can fit the pattern he describes. With almost a hundred reviews here, I'll not go into repetition of the details so well described already. There are some things I would like to add.

For those of a skeptical scientific or conventional religious bent, the gentle narrative approach...
Holy Mac, this book is changing my perception, another leap forward in my spiritual growth
I find it amazing how your soul will reveal to you the lessons to remind who you are and why you are back here on earth. my spiritual growth has already introduced me to the material of reincarnation and lessons and about soul planning before we reincarnate, and what those steps might entail from life review once you are back, the meet and greet team, then healing.. So the material being introduced was not new, but I loved the case studies that the author used to provoke the question on why would souls take on such huge challenges like being gay, addictions, illnesses. I just gone through what I had already recognized a huge soul lesson with the passing of my father after a battle with cancer. To read this book and to affirm what I knew was true and then to read so many more fascinating cases of real life challenges and all to learn about love. It is amazing I wonder to myself, what else I have learnt in previous life to get me here. As it is in life, as I am reading this book,...
soul planning sessions for earth life
Intelligently presented, fast-paced; here is your inside look at pre-birth planning sessions and why souls choose difficult earth journeys for soul growth purposes. It is script writing at the soul level for earth incarnations. This book was hard to put down.

The author has utilized talented mediums to access a soul's pre-birth planning sessions and the resulting stories have you right there watching the planning unfold. For me, this was the high point of each chapter; being present at the pre-birth planning sessions.

Some challenges a soul may wish to set up can be so great that other souls have doubts about being players, so often bargaining is done until agreement is either reached or another soul steps in to take the assignment, or the plan is re-written. This book has you right there, watching the planning unfold and hearing the actual soul conversations.

No abuse to, or affliction of, a soul on the earth level occurs without prior pre-birth...

Scientifically accurate, completely relevant
Ever wondered if something's wrong with you? What happened to your sex "drive", or why you're body's arousal doesn't match you're brain's, or just whether you're normal? This book distills all the latest research about women's sexuality into something that is immediately useful into people's lives. As someone who struggles with changes in sexual function, I found the material life-changing. The writing is clear, friendly, accessible, and just a bit nerdy. The author acknowledges that the focus is on cis women's sexuality (of any orientation) since that's where there's both a huge need for good information and enough scientific research to be evidence-based, but I believe the information is relevant for everyone with a body.

Seriously, read it. It'll change your (sex) life.

"GOD I WISH I HAD THAT BOOK SOONER"
I literally just closed this book, and after giving my mother a recap of the book as well as what it taught me..followed by the exclamation, "GOD I WISH I HAD THAT BOOK SOONER." I checked this book out from the library but I'm ordering it once I finish this review. Not only is it jam-packed full of fabulous advice for a (recently-diagnosed) Aspergian, but it has a great not-so-little section at the end with more resources to help you evaluate where you are socially and to help monitor your daily life to make the most of the best of Asperger Syndrome! (There's also a glossary which is helpful).

The book addresses different topics but throughout it the author accomplishes the teaching of social skills beautifully providing a concept followed by (and I quote):
1) a definition of the concept
2) a list of the salient features
3) positive examples
4) negative examples
5) a prototype
6) opportunities to sort and identify positive and negative...
Excellant Resource for Everyone
This book must have been written with us in mind. It confirmed things we guessed at and even pointed out things we didn't know were a result of our daughter's AS. I wish we had this book a couple years ago as a guide for making it through high school, but she has it now for college. The explanations read a bit wordy but the checklists/bulleted lists after each part make for a handy reference.

Not a practical guide to Social Interactions
This is my first book review and this is the first book I have read on AS. Please disregard other comments describing this book as being similar to a textbook; this book uses formal referencing, but it's a very easy read.

Firstly, I found the Personal Rating Scale at the end of the book to be very useful as it highlighted my significant difficulties with empathy and observational skills. This book focuses on processes for self-learning, rather than providing detailed examples of neuro-typical social interactions. My poor observational skills mean that I need help with neuro-typical social interactions, and I didn't consider the processes in this area were very practical, eg. observing non-verbal communication of actors in a movie, which I thought might depend heavily upon the quality of the acting.

For me, imagine a golf swing. I'm not very good at golf, but I know that the position, alignment and rotation of your entire body is important (eg. head, shoulders,...

Enjoyable AND Informative - Definitely Worth the Read!
When I first read the title, How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's, I wasn't sure exactly what it meant or how it would apply to me. After reading just a few pages, however, I was convinced that this was a message I needed to hear and that I could learn a lot from this book about how to help my son become a successful adult (and kid, for that matter)!

As Jennifer McIlwee Myers, the author and "Aspie at Large", puts it,

"No matter where a child is on the autism spectrum, and no matter where he or she is likely to end up, life skills count!"

While this is not an autobiography, the author draws freely on her own experience and that of her brother Jimmy, who has autism, to illustrate her points, and adds a lot of incredibly useful information by doing so, in my opinion. I also found her writing style to be extremely readable and greatly enjoyed the interjections of humor.

Just reading a few of the chapter titles themselves...
An inspiring story for all!
Jennifer Myers has given us quite a gift with her personal, touching first-hand account of growing up with undiagnosed Asperger's. From her experiences, she has learned which strategies help children become more independent as well as how to deal with schoolyard bullies and teasing. Jennifer trusts parents to do the right thing and uses humor to identify the tools and thinking to help reach and teach kids on the autism spectrum. This book should be required reading for all professionals in the field and offered to every family to instill hope and joy in parenting kids at all stages of development.

Susan Perlson, LCSW

A must-read for ASD families--a great read for ALL families
Temple Grandin personally commanded Jennifer Myers to write this book.

That's right, THE Temple Grandin heard a talk Myers gave, called her, insisted that Myers turn the talk into a book, and offered to write the foreward.

Thank God she did. This is a phenomenal book that makes an inescapable point: If you don't teach your kid the basic life skills, from how to order food at a restaurant to how to pick out groceries to how to be polite to police officers and teachers and other NT (neurotypical) humans, then your kid's world will always be much smaller than you--or probably they--want and need it to be.

On the other hand, if you learn what Myers teaches, and pass that on to your kids, there is an entire "Geek World" out there waiting to embrace your ASD kid. A valid, thriving world with high employability!

Myers is herself an "Aspie at large" whose personal experience of being undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and miraculously parented make for...

Review :
Great recipes and comprehensive diet information
I have had the original Whole Life Nutrition cookbook since it came out and I LOVE this new version. The original has been my most used cookbook over the years, hands down! This new book includes the very latest nutrition science, and I especially appreciated the information and perspective on all the latest diets including the paleo diet.

There are new chapters, and several new recipes. There is a whole chapter on cultured foods. I believe there are over 300 recipes altogether. We really enjoyed the new Quinoa tortillas and the grain free and vegan Apple Walnut Crisp. This book still contains many of our old favorites like Red Lentil Dal, Coconut Vegetable Curry, Wild Salmon with Lemon, Garlic and Thyme, Home-Style Chicken and Vegetable Stew, Raw Energy Balls, and Lemon Blueberry Pudding (I first made this pudding nearly 9 years ago and still remember my first taste, it gave me the satisfaction to continue my first elimination diet!) There are several smoothie and salad...
Delicious & Wholesome!!!
My husband got me the Nourishing Meals Cookbook for my birthday in February and pre-ordered me the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook, which came in a couple of weeks ago. We LOVE the recipes from both cookbooks. Within a few days of getting the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook, we made the beef stew with swiss chard, lentil and brown rice salad, and fish tacos (we used salmon) and we devoured all of them. The chocolate avocado frosting from the Nourishing Meals Cookbook is dangerously delicious -- I found myself eating it from the container with a spoon, and when used to frost the vanilla cake topped with fresh strawberries...YUM!!! We also can't get enough of the walnut brownies from Nourishing Meals Cookbook. I can't wait to make every recipe from both books and am really looking forward to trying the fermentation recipes from Whole Life Nutrition. In addition to the recipes, the books are full of helpful information about the role our diet plays in our overall health and wellness -- I'm...
The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook is a VERY well researched, informative work.
The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook is a VERY well researched, informative work. The title says it's a cookbook but it's much more than just a cookbook. The first chapter opens with the following Voltaire quote that I believe sets the tone for the book: "Everyone should be his own physician. We ought to assist and not force nature. Eat with moderation what agrees with your constitution. Nothing is good for the body but what we can digest. What medicine can produce digestion? Exercise. What will recruit strength? Sleep. What will alleviate incurable ills? Patience." If you believe in the what goes in, must come out philosophy, you will find something in this book to assist you in bettering your health! From the novice to the pro in the kitchen and garden, there's something for you here!

If you've watched Doctor Oz, you've probably heard of the "blue zones" which are areas around the planet where people live the longest and with the greatest health. The recipes...
