Review :
Not as good as the original
I am old enough to own the original version of this book, released in the 1970s. The book was both educational and comforting to me as a young woman looking desperately for information I could trust and understand. So, when one of my favorite nieces became a teenager, I bought the latest version for her. The information, of course, is solid, as we could expect, but the format is so dense, it's unreadable! Instead of the simply written, well laid out book that meant so much to my younger self, this book is more like a textbook to be left on the shelf with all the other texts we tell ourselves we "should read." At a time when women's reproductive rights are under siege, we really need a reliable source of information and support. I wish they offered cliff notes.

Why it's better than the internet
I first read Our Bodies, Ourselves when I was in college and urgently needed to know what was going on with my body and what to look out for during the sexual maelstrom of the 1970s. Thirty five years later, I am buying a copy of the latest edition for my college-aged niece for Christmas, and at her request! I imagine she will read it much as I did -- picking it up to look up a specific question here or there and then getting drawn to read adjacent sections just because they are compelling and she is curious about real life and real people.

She has the option of taking her questions to the internet, which is great. But she wants OBOS because she knows that the information she finds there comes from smart, sex-positive, non-judgmental, feminist women like herself. And she values that as much as I do.

Anna Forbes, MSS

Our Bodies Ourselves
When this book first came out I started giving it as a gift to high school senior girls to take to college with them. First it was my daughters friends and my friends daughters, now it is my grand daughters and my friends grand daughters. This is by far the best reference book on womens bodies that there is available. I am always saddend that there is not one for men. The new edition is up to date but has not lost the emotions of the other editions.

Review :
Humorous, somewhat helpful book written by a woman with serious body issues and low opinion of men
Good stuff: She gives really good advice on certain topics such as not to be embarrassed or afraid of wasting your doctor's time. She helps explain how your relationship with your OB is very different from any other doctor. She is also very reassuring and helps you prepare for any number of gross and/or embarrassing issues that may come up during your pregnancy or delivery.

Bad Stuff: Oh boy does she have body issues!!!! There is barely a topic in the entire book that she doesn't relate back to the fact that you are fat and disgusting when you are pregnant. She herself went from a size four to a ten so she was hardly obese but she will simply not stop harping on how unattractive you are when you are pregnant. She also goes out of her way to let you know that not only she thinks pregnant women are by nature gross to look at but that your husband thinks you look gross. She describes her own husband as only having sex with her when she was bigger out of pity. She does include...
No girlfriend of mine...
I was reading this book (a gift from a friend) while 5 months pregnant and at the gym on an elliptical trainer. It's not well-written and not my sense of humor so I'd been skipping around and did find some parts informative. I was absolutely floored, however, when I read her reasons to avoid exercise when pregnant. Are you kidding me? No ob/gyn today would recommend this unless health problems exist with mother or baby and/ or a pregnancy is high risk. Totally irresponsible to 1) ignore that study after study shows exercise is, in fact, beneficial and recommended for pregnant and nursing women along with the majority of our obese general population and 2) try to induce guilt about what could happen to your baby if you don't follow her moronic, baseless advice.

I wrapped up 25 minutes on the elliptical and then headed into a Cardio/weight class for an hour, tossing this book in the trash as I went. Never felt better!

This book is dated and ridiculous
This book is ridiculous. There are a few good one-liners but do you really want to waste your money for a couple funny lines? The author is obsessed about her weight (gasp! She got all the way up to a SIZE 10! The world is ending!) and silly things like pedicures and stretch marks. I don't get why people say this book "tells it like it is." Why, because she mentions gas and morning sickness? Or does everyone "capitulate" to their husbands' sexual demands so that he won't run out and have an affair? What planet is this woman living on? Oh, yeah, Planet Playboy Bunny and her Supermodel Friends! I wouldn't want to be friends with any of these people.

The chapter on exercise is downright false, saying don't exercise because you could a. cause a miscarriage and b. you'll get fat anyway. Oh, and you won't look cute in your leotard. I haven't worn a leotard since I took ballet around age 7. (Oh, but if you have a library copy or a used copy, do enjoy the chapter on maternity wear...

***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTELLER***

An essential exploration of why and how women’s sexuality works—based on groundbreaking research and brain science—that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy.

Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a “pink pill” for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never exist—but as a result of the research that’s gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women’s sexuality works than we ever thought possible, and Come as You Are explains it all.

The first lesson in this essential, transformative book by Dr. Emily Nagoski is that every woman has her own unique sexuality, like a fingerprint, and that women vary more than men in our anatomy, our sexual response mechanisms, and the way our bodies respond to the sexual world. So we never need to judge ourselves based on others’ experiences. Because women vary, and that’s normal.

Second lesson: sex happens in a context. And all the complications of everyday life influence the context surrounding a woman’s arousal, desire, and orgasm.

Cutting-edge research across multiple disciplines tells us that the most important factor for women in creating and sustaining a fulfilling sex life, is not what you do in bed or how you do it, but how you feel about it. Which means that stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it. Once you understand these factors, and how to influence them, you can create for yourself better sex and more profound pleasure than you ever thought possible.

And Emily Nagoski can prove it.

Review :
The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.
Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. My favorite part of the book was learning about how the brain interprets goals and effort, and how...
Magnificent!
This is an astonishingly good book - written with warmth, wisdom, humor, and heart. Although it's designed to be a self-help book for the general public, I have a suspicion its greater value will be in the fresh and original ideas it will offer to sex therapists. I look forward to using some of Nagoski's assessment, education, and treatment techniques in my own sex therapy practice. The book is also a cornucopia of clinically relevant behavioral science research. I believe many sex clinicians will find themselves returning to it again and again for inspiration and guidance. Well done!

Scientifically accurate, completely relevant
Ever wondered if something's wrong with you? What happened to your sex "drive", or why you're body's arousal doesn't match you're brain's, or just whether you're normal? This book distills all the latest research about women's sexuality into something that is immediately useful into people's lives. As someone who struggles with changes in sexual function, I found the material life-changing. The writing is clear, friendly, accessible, and just a bit nerdy. The author acknowledges that the focus is on cis women's sexuality (of any orientation) since that's where there's both a huge need for good information and enough scientific research to be evidence-based, but I believe the information is relevant for everyone with a body.

Seriously, read it. It'll change your (sex) life.

Review :
Does what it says on the book
An excellent aide to feeding your baby and beyond. I like the chart detailing when is an ideal time to feed a solid and I especially like the myriad of recipes that are offered which would suit the whole family.

Great baby food cook book!
This book has made a great addition to our "baby" cookbooks. The author, Annabel Karmel, shows parents how to make healthy, unprocessed, tasty foods for babies and toddlers. I equally love that many of the recipes for older babies and infants can easily be made for the whole family; this makes dinner time much easier. I like the details of the recipes. Annabel tells exactly how to prepare the ingredients and how to cook/prepare them. However, I wish this book explained the best way to store each recipe. For example, she explains how to prepare pears, but doesn't say if they freeze well or are best eaten right away. I tried to freeze them after I cooked them, but they turned brown and yucky looking. I like that there are suggestions for foods that I normally wouldn't think of feeding my baby (cauliflower, papaya, dried apricots, cantaloupe, parsnip, zucchini, etc). And I like that by incorporating these recipes, my baby will eat a wide range of colors and textures.

This cookbook has been absolutely wonderful! Another girl at work is making her baby food without any cookbook and she always says I am giving her such great ideas. The cookbook helps with variety and easy introductions of new foods mixed with food that she already likes. Although I don't follow the meal planners religiously, I found them immensely helpful as a guideline for what my baby eats. I would highly recommend this cookbook.

This type of item gives exceeded the anticipation, this one has become a great replace on myself personally, The concept showed up safely and also quickly Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism

Essential reading for any parent, teacher, therapist, or caregiver of a person with autism: a groundbreaking book on autism, by one of the world’s leading experts, who portrays autism not as a tragic disability, but as a unique way of being human.

Autism is usually portrayed as a checklist of deficits, including difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. This perspective leads to therapies focused on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant, an internationally renowned autism expert, offers a new and compelling paradigm: the most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior.

In Uniquely Human, Dr. Prizant suggests a major shift in understanding autism: Instead of classifying “autistic” behaviors as signs of pathology, he sees them as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports that will naturally lead to more desirable behavior and a better quality of life. In fact, argues Dr. Prizant, attempts to eliminate “autistic” behaviors may actually interfere with important developmental processes.

While it never discounts the difficulties of living with autism, Uniquely Human offers inspiring stories, and practical advice drawn from Dr. Prizant’s four-decade career working in universities, schools, hospitals, and in private practice. It conveys a deep respect for people with autism and the qualities that make them special. Filled with humanity and wisdom, Uniquely Human offers a compassionate and insightful perspective that parents, professionals, and family members will find uplifting and hopeful.

Review :
A uniquely human book
Humane, sensitive, respectful. I enjoyed especially the section on listening; so poignant with wonderful examples and such a key and under attended to concept to write about in this context, and the section on emotional memory. Wisdom to learn from and celebrate throughout.

Karen Levine, Ph.D.
Psychologist

Must-read about autism and about all humanity!
I love this book. It's a must-read for any parent, educator, caregiver, family member, friend or anyone touched by autism (and special needs, too). This is paradigm-shifting in every way, beautifully written by a brilliant author.

Uniquely Human - Sharing Knowledge and Wisdom
The world is a better place when people with knowledge and wisdom share their intellect and experiences. Uniquely Human is a must-read for parents, siblings, grandparents, care givers and professionals who are toiling daily in the trenches of life with loved ones enduring the complexities of autism. Dr. Prizant provides a wealth of information on autism in an understandable format, delivered with warmth and humanity. If you are one of the many seeking insight into a field that has defied easy explanations and solutions – this book if for you. (Arnold S. Schickler, Founder and CEO of Autism Community Experience, Inc.)
