Review :
Adequate book but too complicated
This book gives a very nice overview of PCOS and a concise description of the syndrome. However, the diet plan that she lays out is quite complicated. It involves EXTENSIVE counting of carbs and basically, relies on the glycemic index to determine what and when to eat. For the most part, it is correct but it was too much for me to follow, while trying to cook for a family. Basically, I took control of my PCOS by:

1. Cutting out grains and refined starches (sugar, breads, pastas)
2. Cutting out root veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions)
3. Increasing protein
4. Increasing water.

That's it. That's all there is to it. I even allow myself one small helping of "Carb laden" food a day and have steadily lost weight and increased my fertility.

Seven pound weight loss in just over a week!
I was first diagnosed with PCOS nearly 18 years ago. After feeling as if the medical community completely ignored the condition, I gave up trying to halt the dangerous effects of my diagnosis and simply watched my hair fall out, my weight increase, etc. I've been on medications to counter the effects for over ten years and saw little improvement in my symptoms. Then, two weeks ago, a friend loaned me a copy of this book. For the first time in a long time, I was interested in learning more. I thought I had read it all. Wrong. Not once in all of these years has a physician told me to watch my carbs and that simple timing of the necessary carbs I do eat could really make a difference. I feel like an idiot for not making the connection sooner but, well, here I am. I am only about 12 pounds overweight. Not too bad for someone with PCOS but it is disconcerting because I watch as my weight slowly inches upward, no matter what I do. I don't fry food. I eat fast-food occasionally but...
Very good book! A must read for women with PCOS! Updated info!
Very thorough and informative. From following the meal plan laid out in the book I have already lost 10lbs. in not even a week! This isn't just a "diet" book although it says on the cover. It helped me understand the syndrome. I have read two other very well written books about PCOS and this is right up there with them if not better. The author provides info on studies that are very recent about PCOS. I feel more comfortable about my condition. This book helped me feel empowered with the proper info and tools to tackle this condition. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has PCOS.

Most Practical Asperger Syndrome Book!
As a home school teacher of a precocious 10 year old AS son and the wife of an equally brilliant, but emotionally unstable, disabled husband (possibly AS), I use the information contained in this book to help me manage both my child and husband during those difficult moments. This book is a godsend for those of us with explosive AS loved ones and a blessing for helping AS loved ones with milder anxiety features. The book aids in identifying anxiety triggers and sensory overload triggers that can start "the rumbling stage" of a rage cycle to help make the environment more "AS FRIENDLY." While often times environmental triggers cannot be avoided, the ability to recognise the rumble stage early and apply practical interventions, is what makes this book particularly valuable to me as a teacher and stand-in therapist for my son and hubby. Not very many specialists are out there to properly diagnose and treat AS. This book makes it easier for AS families to...
Practical state-of-the-art guide and invaluable resource
Asperger Syndrome and Rage is a practical, state-of-the-art guide for parents and professionals. As a parent of a young adult son with Asperger Syndrome and a school psychologist, I felt as though the authors had lived in my home and worked with the students I served in the school. Feasible and realistic solutions to assist individuals with AS to become successful in their daily lives and to learn to monitor and control uncomfortable situations are presdented. Every concept introduced is clearly explained in easy to understand language and is followed by real-life examples. The ultimate goal of this book is to help individuals with AS understand their exceptionality, complete with its strengths and challenges. This book is an invaluable resource.

Straightforward and practical help
I am the mother of THREE children with Asperger Syndrome. When our oldest son began attending school we were exasperated with the school staff and their inability to understand that he was being triggered into meltdowns, and we had no way to track what was setting him off. This book has a clear and concise methodology for tracking meltdown triggers in the school setting. In addition it gives very specific examples of what to do and not to do during each stage of the rage cycle. Because it is brief many of the staff were willing to read it. Using the methods in this book were were able to create a plan that helped eliminate a large number of triggers because the staff finally understood there were EXTERNAL causes, not internal or behavioral causes as they had assumed.

If it was up to me it would be standard issue in every school and required reading for every special education program. Teachers need and want this information because they are not taught how to deal with our...

"GOD I WISH I HAD THAT BOOK SOONER"
I literally just closed this book, and after giving my mother a recap of the book as well as what it taught me..followed by the exclamation, "GOD I WISH I HAD THAT BOOK SOONER." I checked this book out from the library but I'm ordering it once I finish this review. Not only is it jam-packed full of fabulous advice for a (recently-diagnosed) Aspergian, but it has a great not-so-little section at the end with more resources to help you evaluate where you are socially and to help monitor your daily life to make the most of the best of Asperger Syndrome! (There's also a glossary which is helpful).

The book addresses different topics but throughout it the author accomplishes the teaching of social skills beautifully providing a concept followed by (and I quote):
1) a definition of the concept
2) a list of the salient features
3) positive examples
4) negative examples
5) a prototype
6) opportunities to sort and identify positive and negative...
Excellant Resource for Everyone
This book must have been written with us in mind. It confirmed things we guessed at and even pointed out things we didn't know were a result of our daughter's AS. I wish we had this book a couple years ago as a guide for making it through high school, but she has it now for college. The explanations read a bit wordy but the checklists/bulleted lists after each part make for a handy reference.

Not a practical guide to Social Interactions
This is my first book review and this is the first book I have read on AS. Please disregard other comments describing this book as being similar to a textbook; this book uses formal referencing, but it's a very easy read.

Firstly, I found the Personal Rating Scale at the end of the book to be very useful as it highlighted my significant difficulties with empathy and observational skills. This book focuses on processes for self-learning, rather than providing detailed examples of neuro-typical social interactions. My poor observational skills mean that I need help with neuro-typical social interactions, and I didn't consider the processes in this area were very practical, eg. observing non-verbal communication of actors in a movie, which I thought might depend heavily upon the quality of the acting.

For me, imagine a golf swing. I'm not very good at golf, but I know that the position, alignment and rotation of your entire body is important (eg. head, shoulders,...

Although having Asperger Syndrome (AS) can make romantic relations difficult, having a fulfilling relationship with an Asperger man is certainly not impossible. A woman in love with a man with AS may interpret his difficulties with communication and socialization as a lack of interest in the relationship. He may vacillate between being gentle and caring to seeming cold and distant. She may find his behaviour hard to understand, resulting in feelings of loneliness, isolation, and confusion. This book shows how to overcome these difficulties and maintain a loving relationship with an AS partner. From an unwillingness to show affection in public or even sleep in the same bed to problems holding down a job, this book looks at 22 common traits that women may discover when they are dating, living with or married to a man with Asperger's Syndrome. Rudy Simone explores the complications of Asperger's relationships with honesty and understanding, drawing on research and personal experience to inform and advise women with AS partners. She offers helpful tips for improving the relationship and finding fulfilment both individually and as a couple. This book will help women to understand the male Asperger's mind and, equally, it can help men with AS to see things from their partner's perspective. It will also be of interest to counsellors working with couples where one partner has Asperger's Syndrome.

Review :
Very Helpful
Long before a diagnosis, my husband and I knew that he had Asperger's. It just took the medical community all these years to be able to test and diagnose adults. I found this book helpful and really want to get my husband to read it as well. This author points out that ( depending on the severity of the Asperger's ) the diagnosed spouse or partner CAN learn some things to cope and behave in a more "normal" fashion. I know this to be true because I've known my husband since high school and that's been 30 years. We've only been married for 17 years. I know he can "adapt" when he makes an effort. It just seems that since the diagnosis he is much less willing to "adapt". I think this book will be useful in guiding a conversation between us about expectations going forward. It states the woman's ( or non-Asperger's) side clearly and in a way I think my husband can understand. As is typical for many AS folks, he can receive information; especially information regarding OUR...
Let's be honest here.
Yes, there are some very attractive, brilliant and intriguing men out there who also have Aspergers, and they can make the sweetest dates in the world. But the majority of women, NT or not, who marry an aspie man end up having one or more children with some form of autism *and* being the de facto sole caretakers and coordinators of the household. Most of these women will end up with major depression and one or more autoimmune diseases from never having their own light reflected back at them as time goes on living with someone who is almost completely unreciprocal but who is supposed to be your life partner.

Books such as this one and "Going over the edge" by Kathy Marshack are lifelines for such women because leaving their marriages tends to be logistically, emotionally and economically insurmountable. (Try doing it with a special needs child, depressed, economically stretched and socially isolated, Cassandra.)

But I have a problem with publishers who aim to...
No help to me
This book is well written and honest, but only tells you how to cope with a man who has Asperger's. How to bend to his needs in order to keep the peace. I've been doing that with my husband for 25 years and no matter how I bend to his ways he still finds ways to be angry at everything in the world.

There is no advice on how to get what you need emotionally and physically or how to make communication easier, other than going out with your girlfriends and keeping yourself busy with activities that don't involve your husband. I'm wondering what the point is of being married to him is then. I'm thinking that these are all things you can do without an Aspi husband and then you can come home to a peaceful empty household. In other words divorce or don't marry an Aspi to start with.

I've read just about every book on Asperger's out there and I'm starting to believe that the reason there isn't any advice on how to help your Aspi husband to give you what you need is...

Meet Adam - a young boy with AS. Adam invites young readers to learn about AS from his perspective. In this book, Adam helps children understand the difficulties faced by a child with AS; he tells them what AS is, what it feels like to have AS and how they can help children with AS by understanding their differences and appreciating their many talents. This book is ideally suited for boys and girls between 7 and 15 years old and also serves as an excellent starting point for family and classroom discussions.

Review :
The Voice of Clarity
Adam is a 9-year-old boy who has Asperger's Syndrome (AS). AS is a neurobiological condition that is on the autism spectrum. People who have AS confront any number of sensory processing and communication issues. Adam gives good, factual explanations for how and why people with AS run into social road blocks. The best part of this book is that Adam appears to accept himself and the AS part of himself. That is what makes this book so outstanding.

This book will no doubt prove helpful to adults on the spectrum in helping to approach the subject of being on the a/A (autism/Asperger's) spectrum with NT (neurotypical) relatives, co-workers and other peers. It is a wonderful introduction to a/A and bridges the chasm between a/A and the NT population. It brings all readers onto neuro-neutral ground.

How I wish I had had this book when I was Adam's age. How lucky Adam is to know what his "undefined differences" were at a young age! This book is definitely worth...
A wonderful introduction to AS
My 7 yr old son has recently been diagnosed with AS. Reading this book opened a lot of eyes to the reason why he does some of the things he does. He chose to share it with his classmates. The teacher read it to the class, to hopefully give them some insight into why my boy is just a little different than the typical 2nd grader. I loved the approach of this book. It portrays the image that different is not a bad thing it is just different.

Highly recommend!
This book was found during my search for information that would assist our 13 year old AS (Asperger Syndrome) son to socialize with his peers. It proved to exceed my expectations and if I could give this book a 10 stars rating I would.

When my son read this book it was like a "light bulb" went off for him. It helped give him a clarity that I found difficult to explain. My only regret is that I did not have this book several years ago. It would have been extremely helpful to share with teachers and compassionate classmates during 4th or 5th grade when socializing was becoming an interest but he just wasn't succesful and other kids did not understand (or tolerate) his differences. But... better late than never.

One of the main things that I didn't count on was that this book also gave our son insight on how his classmates might react to him and how his misunderstanding of social cues and inuendos might make his classmates think he is unfriendly. It opened his...

Girls with Asperger's Syndrome are less frequently diagnosed than boys, and even once symptoms have been recognised, help is often not readily available. The image of coping well presented by AS females of any age can often mask difficulties, deficits, challenges, and loneliness. This is a must-have handbook written by an Aspergirl for Aspergirls, young and old. Rudy Simone guides you through every aspect of both personal and professional life, from early recollections of blame, guilt, and savant skills, to friendships, romance and marriage. Employment, career, rituals and routines are also covered, along with depression, meltdowns and being misunderstood. Including the reflections of over thirty-five women diagnosed as on the spectrum, as well as some partners and parents, Rudy identifies recurring struggles and areas where Aspergirls need validation, information and advice. As they recount their stories, anecdotes, and wisdom, she highlights how differences between males and females on the spectrum are mostly a matter of perception, rejecting negative views of Aspergirls and empowering them to lead happy and fulfilled lives. This book will be essential reading for females of any age diagnosed with AS, and those who think they might be on the spectrum. It will also be of interest to partners and loved ones of Aspergirls, and anybody interested either professionally or academically in Asperger's Syndrome.

Review :
If you think you might be an Aspergirl, you NEED to read this book. Today.
I was astounded to recognize myself in these pages. For decades I have been wrestling with self-diagnosing my non-normal neurological behaviors, but always sort of discounted Aspergers as an answer.

It makes sense now that I realize most previous studies on Aspergers Syndrome were based on studies of men and boys. It's a huge relief to realize that Aspergers presents differently among girls and women - and to realize I that have found myself within these pages.

It's at once incredibly freeing and a little sad. It's freeing to realize I am not alone, not some alien masquerading (poorly) as a human. It's freeing to know who I am, neurologically. But then, sad, to realize that the things that have been endless challenges for me - mainly work, relationships and finances - are NOT going to magically go away, no matter how hard or optimistically I try to fix them. They are part and parcel of me. I have to work *with* these things - allow for them - and give up on...
Like a Pat Benetar girl-power anthem...
But in book form and specifically for Aspergirl...

Seriously, it is *that* honest, empowering, and inspiring.

Give Aspergirls wings that they can use, and watch them soar!

This book is not intended as a "maybe my female child falls somewhere on the spectrum" or a tool to identify where on the spectrum a person may fall.

It is delightfully specific. I think the best audience for this book is well, Aspergirls of all ages, women who suspect they have as-of-yet-undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. It is a good book for parents of girls, young women, and even grown women with Asperger's Syndrome. It is a book that would be helpful for any loved one of a female with Asperger's Syndrome. It is definitely mostly for Aspergirls of all ages, or parents of Aspergirls (or suspected Aspergirls) of all ages.

If my parents took an interest in knowing the real me (an Aspergirl raising a son with Asperger's) instead of lamenting in how I failed in...
A Godsend! AsperGirl Power!
This is one of the best books about girls and women on the autism/Asperger's spectrum that I have EVER read! No parent, educator or medical professional should be without this gem. Women and girls on the spectrum will certainly recognize themselves in this stellar masterpiece of a book. It is very empowering!

If you are a girl or woman on the spectrum, this book is truly your best friend. Rudy Simone, like Dr. Travis Thompson and Dr. Tony Attwood is the voice of tolerance and understanding in re the a/A experience. She really "gets" it!

I like the way she replaces harmful verbiage such as "stimming," which is a term I never liked either with the more tolerant and much more accurate term "soothing" behaviors. She dislikes the term "stimming" because to her it sounds "creepy." I dislike it because I think it trivializes or downplays the need to release excess tension when sensory input gets to be too much. After all, the neurotypical (NT) population...

Review :
A sweet book very appropriate for children and people new to their understanding of AS
My library contains dozens of books on AS. I have read them all. I wish I could get others to do the same, but time being what it is and life being as complex as ever, this is simply an impossible wish. I highly recommend this book as *the* book to present to people with little time but much need to learn about AS. It is also a great book to present to children; those on the spectrum and those in the neurotypical population who would all benefit from understanding their peers with AS and other ASD/PDD related issues.

This book is cute and sweet. It is not top-shelf research. It is gentle and gracious. A perfect coffee table book to garnish interest and start discussions. I loved it.

It's a 5 minute enjoyable read
I am a parent with two children who have AS. We found this book at B & N and my son loved it. It described him, his behaviors and it could have just as easily been him in the pictures instead of the cats. I found it to be a very good way to describe some of his behaviors and the feelings he and his sister have. I will be buying it from Amazon (much better price) and plan on sending it to school with him. The one or two people at his school who understand AS will get a kick out of it. Since it is a cute and fun book, maybe some of his teachers will look at it and perhaps start to have an understanding of him and his behaviors. It's a quick, easy and fun read (picture book) which hits the AS behaviors dead on.

Meow, Hooray & At Last!
Ten years ago, when I finally figured out what Asperger's was and, at the same time, I discovered that I had several Asperger's children, and a few Asperger's adults, on my caseload as a psychotherapist, I began searching for easy ways to explain Asperger's. It was, and still is, an uphill struggle.

I'd already found what, to my knowledge, remains one of the best general books on Asperger's Syndrome: Tony Attwood's Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals. (A more up-to-date and extensive general book, now, is Attwood's The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome. It's much longer, but still quite readable & it's filled with clear examples.) It's great for adults wanting a clear, solid understanding -- parents, family members, teachers, mental health professionals, scout-leaders, church leaders, and friends of...

Review :
The Asperger's Bible - Truly a Godsend
Dr. Attwood is the leading expert on Asperger's Syndrome (AS) which is the spectrum partner to autism. This book is, at the time of this review his most current work. It is a shining gem and one of the standouts in autism/Asperger's (a/A) literature. If you are on the a/A continuum or know somebody who is, this book is your best friend. You will refer to it many times.

What makes this book all the more excellent and distinct is that Dr. Attwood discusses adults on the a/A spectrum as well. Autism in its myriad forms including AS does not clear up once a person hits adulthood. If you have it, it is with you for the long haul. Dr. Attwood's book and words of wisdom help lighten the load.

I have bought several copies of this book and have kept one for myself and gave the others to professionals in dire need of it. This book deserves a place of high honor and no parent; professional; person on the spectrum; anybody involved with a person/people on the...
A thoughtful, compassionate, accessible snapshot
This book is considerably different from Attwood's 1998 book, in that it's more addressed to the general public, and has much more material about adult Aspies. A great many scholarly papers and books have been distilled to make up a good portion of the material. There is a great deal of encouraging material about materials developed to help Aspies navigate society, such as the Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations of Carol Gray, and the Interactive Guide to Emotions by Simon Baron-Cohen and his associates. Another stream of material is from the autobiographies of Aspies such as Liane Halliday Willie, Temple Grandin, Stephen Shore, Luke Jackson and Nita Jackson. It's great to have a human face on the phenomenon of AS.

There seems to be a running thread through the book that sensory sensitivity is a bigger deal for Aspies than previously considered. When I read the chapter on sensory sensitivity, I recalled autism books that suggested autism was a response to body...
Just one book... make it this one.
I have read lots of books on AS and reviewed many of them. What I am always warning is that in most cases any one book never gives a complete picture.

Tony Attwood's book though is about as complete a picture as you could get right now and is not only far superior to his first guide to the subject but to many others on the market.

If you read just one book on AS this should be it. It is easy to read, packed with information, and the author's respect and appreciation for people with Asperger's is evident on every page.

It's professional, it's factual, it's understanding, it's worth owning a copy.

Being a teen or tween isn't easy for anyone -- but it's especially tough for Asperkids. I know. I was one, I taught a whole bunch, and I am going to be raising three! That's also why I know that Asperkdis deserve their very own guide to all of the hidden social rules that are awfully confusing to us, even if they seem obvious to everyone else. "The Asperkids' (Secret) Rule Book of Social Rules." This isn't your momma's Emily Post, and there is no "don't do this" finger-wagging or patronizing "high and mighty preaching" here. Instead, the "Secret" Book gives Asperkids (aged 10-17) respectful, funny insights written "for Aspies by an Aspie." Chock full of illustrations, logic and even a practice session or six (in comic strip style, thank you very much!), this is the handbook every adult Aspie wishes we'd had growing up, but never did.

Review :
Best "how to" book for an Aspie kid!
Of all the books about Asperger's that I own, this is the only one with "how to" information for the child. I bought this book a couple of months ago for my 11 year old son who has Asperger's. We read one chapter together each night and both learn from it. We even reference it when he comes home from school after a "bad day" and look up how he could have handled the situation differently. I would recommend this book to any one who has an asperger child in the pre-teen to tween age.

Great book not just for our Aspie kids, but any child with social struggles
At first glance, this book looks terrific for kids with Aspergers, but also for any kids, including gifted kids, who need a little help understanding the social expectations of life.

Here's what one parent of a gifted child who also struggles socially has to say...

"The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules" is like the answer to my prayers. My son has not been diagnosed as Asperger's, and he lacks some key characteristics, but this book is EXACTLY the book I've wished existed for helping him navigate social situations, etc. It is direct, funny and easy to read and doesn't "sugar coat" the dynamics of tweens and teens. I am giving it to him this afternoon and will report back, but if you haven't seen this book and have a kid that struggles with how to "fit in" or exhibits behaviors that make you say "WHAT makes him think that was a good idea to do/say!?!" it's worth checking out!

Thanks to the parents of Hoagies' Gifted Education Page for this great...
A Book for Asperkid Teens, Tweens & honestly, Aspies & Caregivers of ALL ages!
I was honored to have the opportunity to read an advance copy of the book.

Not only is The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules a book for Asperkid teens and tweens, it is also a book for their parents, caregivers and for anyone who grew up Aspie and wants to understand themselves and the world around them better. Being undiagnosed until in my 40s, this is the book I wish I had when I was a teenager. Thank you Jennifer, for not only making these social rules no longer 'secret' but for helping create a social survival guide that helps promote acceptance, enrichment, inspiration and empowerment for Asperkids everywhere!
