Review :
Good but one flaw
This is pretty good. The only complaint that I have is that the author does not posses a strong foundation in Fertility Awareness Method (FAM). She mentions several times that you are ovulating if you have physical signs of ovulation but does not go into detail. The only way to know if you are ovulating besides exquisitely timed ultrasound, is to track your basal body temperature to see a thermal shift. OPKs (pee sticks) only predict when your body is trying to ovulate, not that it has or will. When and if a woman ovulates is vital information from a functional medicine standpoint. I follow this author and do find her to be quite knowledgeable about reproductive health, but I can't give this book a full 5 stars. In women's health it is so important for women to understand and track their cycles. Just recording the days of your period is inadequate when troubleshooting cycle problems.
On to the good stuff (of which there is plenty); I love the way Dr. Briden makes it...
Tools and information every woman should have access to
What an eye opening read. I flew through this book in just a couple of days. Lara addresses women's health in a way that is REAL and accessible. I feel inspired to take the steps I need to now and after reading this book feel armed with the tools and information every woman should have access to.

Super smart and a great resource
This is a super smart, straight-talking, trouble shooting guide to solving all kinds of period problems without pharmaceuticals, from PMS to PCOS. It goes to show that we can heal symptoms of hormonal imbalance without having to use the side effect-laden birth control pill (which only masks the issue anyway).

It's truly a great resource to keep by your side whatever stage of life you're in, but it would be especially helpful to those wanting to make a smooth transition off the Pill.

  • Shows how a woman's health and her environment during pregnancy may have a much bigger impact on her child than was previously thought
  • Includes the authors' compelling personal story of developing the Better Baby Plan shared in the book as they had their own better babies

Good Information but No Citations
I bought this book out of general health interest and less for an immediate baby interest. It is 'quite extreme' for the casual person interested in health improvement. If you are chronically ill or dealing with health problems you are more likely to accept the extremes (and they'll potentially have a bigger impact on your quality of life).

There is a lot of information in this book and if you follow Dave Asprey's blog there are some good additional details here and there that you won't have already heard or seen in his posts. In particular in the areas of toxins and detoxification you'll find more details (or to a degree different information) than that found on his blog or podcast. I finished this book in a couple of days as a result, and took down some good notes on areas to investigate further and potential actions to take to improve my health. If you follow Dave's blog I imagine you'd find it similarly useful.

Some of the new parts to me were:

Great for anyone, not just expectant moms.
This book is so comprehensive, well-written, backed by research, yet easy for the layperson to understand. If you want to conceive, are already pregnant, or are nursing, it's a must read! AND if you are interested in becoming healthier In general and balancing your hormones, follow the recommendations in The Better Baby Book. I am not trying to conceive (yet) but I couldn't wait for the Bulletproof Executive book to come out, so I got The Better Baby Book as a way to get more detailed information in the meantime. After reading it, I realized I have some things to consider before even trying to get pregnant. The nutrition and exercise advice is phenomenal, and the supplement section is one of the best I've seen. Do your family a favor and get this book. (PS No, I don't work for the authors! I'm just really passionate about the importance of getting this information into as many hands and minds as possible.)

FANTASTIC content, missing a piece or 2 though
There is SOO much information out there about what to eat, what affects fertility, fetal development, etc. Most of this information is self-contradictory garbage.

This book is heavily science-based, showing you the research to support the recommended diet, supplements, and environmental changes. Overall, I've made several of the suggested changes to myself (a husband to a pregnant wife) and noted a substantial improvement in how I look and feel - so I am confident that the recommendations are solid.

If you enjoy learning about health and are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, this book is FANTASTIC.

However, the focus of this book is information, allowing you to make better decisions, but is NOT focused on actual behavioral change. I think the book would be substantially improved with more of a focus on how to actually implement these changes into your life - including a 'biggest bang for your buck' and 'start here' list.

Everything in...

This is not your run-of-the-mill fitness book. Developed by world-renowned gluteal expert Bret Contreras, Strong Curves offers an extensive fitness and nutrition guide for women seeking to improve their physique, function, strength, and mobility.

Contreras spent the last eighteen years researching and field-testing the best methods for building better butts and shapelier bodies. In Strong Curves, he offers the programs that have proven effective time and time again with his clients, allowing you to develop lean muscle, rounded glutes, and greater confidence.

Each page is packed with information decoding the female anatomy, providing a better understanding as to why most fitness programs fail to help women reach their goals. Best strength building programme for women. Hands down!!!
I bought this book a couple of years ago, and thought the exercises looked too easy to start with, so put it away. I mean, how hard is a body weight bridge?
A year later I completed the Lift Like a Goddess programme and looked for something new. I dragged out this book and decided to give level 1 a go. Yes, the amount of exercises were shorter than I was used to, and I didn't come home from the gym feeling smashed. I left each time feeling I could give more.

However, don't be fooled by the shorter workouts! I found I could not do more than 6 bodyweight bridges without getting a cramp. To attempt even 1 holding a weight on my stomach was sheer impossibility. So I gladly stayed at level 1 and worked through it consistently. The day after each workout, was I ever sore.

Within 3 weeks I found myself getting stronger. Then, so surprisingly, I managed a proper squat. I have severe scoliosis and a damaged Achilles' tendon due to surgery on my leg for the scoliosis...
Gorgeous Glutes, Better Body
Wow, how do I even start this review. First I'd like to mention that I'm not genetically gifted in the glute department. I love my body and am naturally thin, but I've always wanted a better butt. Earlier this year, I stumbled across Bret's blog, and learned about the barbell glute bridge and barbell hip thrust. I was hesitant, but having tried just about every method out there, including yoga, Pilates, spin, step, circuits, squats, lunges, and deadlifts, I decided I had nothing to lose by listening to Bret's advice. Fast-forward four months later - I've put 3 inches on my glutes, I have a great butt for the first time in my life, and my confidence and enjoyment in the gym is at an all-time high.

I'm a big believer in Bret's methods and I think that most women should be training in this fashion. That said, before Strong Curves, I realize I was just "winging it," and I didn't really understand how to design my workouts. I've been patiently waiting to receive my Strong Curves...
Good information, needs an Index (edited: index created!)
Edited update to review: The author has provided an index! The link is in the comments, and I'll try and post it here. Since that was all that was really lacking for me I changed the stars as well. Thanks Kelly! and thanks to Marie for her version in the interim!

Original Review:
This book has a lot of great stuff- the workout plans and exercise guides offer lots of great information.

However, it would have been amazing if someone had taken the time to make an actual index for the "Exercise Index." Throughout the book there are great plans that list and picture workouts/exercises. However, to see the details of an exercise, or to see alternate exercises, one is simply instructed to refer to the detailed "Exercise Index." Pretty easy! Except.... the exercise index has no list of page numbers and exercises. You have to go through the entire thing to find the exercises (which are...
