Amazon.com Exclusive
An Essay from Heidi Murkoff
What to Expect started with information--or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time--I didn't have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn't as easy to find out what to expect as you'd think. I created What to Expect When You're Expecting because I couldn't find the answers to my questions or the reassurance for my worries that I was searching for in the pregnancy books I read (and believe me, I read plenty). I was a mom on a mission--a mission to help other moms and dads worry less and enjoy their pregnancies (and their babies, and their toddlers) more. And I've been on that mission ever since.

So what sent me back to recreate What to Expect--for a fourth time? Today, there's definitely no lack of information on pregnancy. In fact there's more information than ever before (a quick online search of pregnancy or a glance at pages and pages of pregnancy and parenting options right here on Amazon will clue you in on that). But often what's still hard to find is the right kind of information. Information that's accurate yet empathetic, reassuring yet realistic--that empowers you, but doesn't overwhelm or confuse you, that guides you but doesn't dictate to you. And it's not just about the right information, it's about information that's presented in the way that's most helpful--easy to access, easy to digest, easy to use. It's about information that makes your pregnant life less stressful--more enjoyable, and, well, easier.

The fourth edition is a new What To Expect for a new generation of readers--you!--and I'm excited to say it's the best What To Expect yet. It's packed with all new information, of course (since things tend to change quickly in the baby-making and baby-delivering business--something you're probably all too aware of already if you've made more than one trip to the birthing room). But it doesn't only take into account what's new in obstetrics and what's new in pregnancy; it takes into account what's relevant to pregnant women now. Lifestyle. Working. Eating on the run. Juggling the pregnant life with real life. Keeping up with relationships. Birthing options that are family friendly and pregnancy care that incorporates the best that complimentary and alternative medicine has to offer. Managing multiples (which more and more moms are carrying). Sorting out the information from the misinformation--the reality from the hype, fact from Internet legend.

The fourth edition also takes into account how you likely use books these days, so the format is even more accessible than ever. More geared to in-the-moment, find-it-in-a-flash reading.

Most important of all, the fourth edition celebrates pregnancy. I have a passion for pregnancy, and always have. I love moms, I love dads, and I love babies. But everything about this fourth edition from the happy, excited mom-to-be on the cover, proudly caressing her beautiful belly and its even more beautiful contents, to the adorable week-by-week description of the making of your baby, to the positive (yet realistic), mom-to-mom tone throughout--this fourth edition is not just an explanation of those 9 amazing (though often bewildering) months you have ahead of you. It's a celebration of them.

What to Expect When You're Expecting fourth edition is everything moms and dads have come to expect from What to Expect... only better. And I can't wait to start sharing it with you.

I guess you can say--I'm a proud mama all over again.

What to Expect the First Year

The What to Expect Pregnancy Journal & Organizer

Review :
Good but there are better.
The drawback for this book is it clearly explains almost every possible complication. With the monthly format it is a lot to read at a time. The list of complications and possible symptoms each moth can be very daunting. Yet with all of that the book is also a great resource. It gives you many things to consider that you may never have thought of. It is much more comprehensive than many other pregnancy books. It has some nice charts in the back to help you keep track of weight, size and other notes for the Doctor's or Midwives. It also has a section for coping with pregnancy loss and also preparing for the next child. A good resource for any couple expecting a child. With over 12 Million copies sold this book now, in it's 3rd edition has been trusted by many people. The authors have also written:
What to Expect the First Year
What to Expect the Toddler Years

The What to Expect When You're Expecting Pregnancy Organizer

Does not deserve to be America's #1 pregnancy book
I just read this book cover to cover. No, seriously. And man, am I glad I was not pregnant at the time.

This is far from the first pregnancy/childbirth/parenting book I've ever read. I'm a health and research nut, and a librarian, so I do a lot of research and reading before I do anything. I try to consult a variety of sources from different viewpoints. Since this is the #1 most-recommended pregnancy book, I figured I might as well read this one too and see what all the fuss is about. I have yet to figure it out.

1) The main issue I have with this book is the clear lack of research that went into it. There are absolutely ZERO references in the entire book (and it is a beast of a book). The author's credentials also seem to be limited to a) she's a mom, and b) she is the author of this book. Yet she spouts "knowledge" and information like it's gospel. The forward is written by an esteemed OB/GYN, and I can see why he endorses the book, which I...
Not the best pregnancy guide
This was "THE BOOK" everyone told me to get when I got pregnant for the first time. So, of course, I ran out and bought it the moment my pregnancy test was positive! But, honestly, I didn't think it was that helpful.
The second chapter is titled "Now that you are Pregnant" and most of that chapter deals with "what you may be concerned about" which could also be titled "everything that could possibly go horribly wrong with your pregnancy" and it scared me half to death. I think it increased the amount of worrying I was doing exponentially [which couldn't have been a good thing!].
I also thought the diet portion was pretty ridiculous. I agree that we need to eat very healthily, especially during pregnancy. I eat very well and I ate especially well when pregnant. However, no human being I've ever met could [or would] stick to this diet plan. It was so strict as to be useless, in my opinion. I think people do much better with a...

Review :
The best book for new twin moms and twin moms-to-be
I have read a LOT of books on how to survive your first year with twins and this is by far my favorite. I really like the balance the author found between providing truly helpful advice and personal stories of being in the trenches. She has a great sense of humor and will make you bust out in laughter more than once, but her voice is also very warm and conversational. Like you're chatting with your wise mom-friend who's "been there, done that" and is ready to dish everything you need to know. I just survived my first year with twins and I wish this book existed sooner! Even if your babies are already here and you may be past the first few months, I still think it's a worthwhile read for the advice on sleep training and also on marital issues (something that most twin books I read didn't really cover in depth... the advice she gives is very helpful to me even after their 1st birthday...)

Great tips; left me feeling happy
A quick, enjoyable read. This book offered practical tips that seem like they'll be very helpful once my twins arrive, and didn't leave me terrified. I can see myself returning to this book many times to refresh as my babies progress through their first year.

I love my daughters to death but after having twins I ...
There is really nothing wrong with this book in itself. But I read eight books about having twins and none of them remotely prepared me for the amount of work twins are. I love my daughters to death but after having twins I think a single baby would be a cake walk. There is no book I could find that really prepares you for your experience and I doubt such a book exist.

A quirky, colorful memory book for the whole family, this keepsake will have you laughing, reflecting, and reminiscing for years to come.

Review :
Perfect gift!
I purchased several of these as gifts for new moms because I think this book is fun to read, quick and easy to fill out, and the perfect keepsake to have later on. This book is very different from the other baby book I have seen.

My children are 14 and 17 now, but when they were born I received baby books to record milestones such as, when they rolled over, sat up, first tooth, etc. But now, when I look back at those books I see that they did not lead me to record the things I want to remember and share with my children. "When We Became Three" captures both mom and dad's feelings as well as milestones. My kids are always asking me for stories from when they were little and even though I remember thinking that I would never forget the cute things they did and said and how I felt, I did forget. If I had this book, I would have all those treasured stories to share with them.

The book is also very funny and clever with its mad libs type fill in the...
Making Memories and Laughing out Loud for Years to Come
This book is great – really original! It has lots of creative sections that you don’t really see in other memory books. It also uses many well thought out and funny checklists that make it easy for Mom and Dad to fill out. I gave this to a friend who recently had a baby. She said she had another memory book, but she actually fills out “When We Became Three” because of the checklists. She can fit it into her busy schedule. She also said she always laughs out loud when reading the checklists. Another good thing abut this memory book is it has just the type of information that my kids will want to know about when they’re all grown up. I can picture us sitting together and looking through it and talking about all these amazing memories together.

PERFECT BOOK for the expectant mother!
This is what the author has to say about this book:
"...low-maintenance and pressure free, wise yet whimsical way to capture all the milestones and special moments of your own special family."

I LOVE that! Who has time these days for elaborate anymore?

I also LOVE that the first thing this book has you record is how you and your spouse met...with a "fill in the blanks!" What a GREAT keepsake for baby!

You will then go on to write about how you felt when you found out you were expecting and how your spouse felt.

There is a place to tell about your cravings and "which of the seven pregnant dwarfs were you" :)

* Adventures of the expectant parents
* Making space for baby
* Gender predictions
* Places for pictures
* Games to assign baby duties
* And a first letter to baby

All this BEFORE the baby even comes...

Then you have spaces and fill-ins for:...

Review :
First Month: Buy this book
It took me too long to finish this book ... because my wife kept stealing it since it was a lot more fun than any of her pregnancy books! However, I just finished this easy read, and I couldn't help but recommend this to fathers-to-be.
Let's be clear: this isn't an instruction manual or anything to take too seriously. It is a very fun, month-by-month account of pregnancy.
For the people who gave it low ratings, maybe you were looking for too much out of it ... this book isn't going to stop your wife's morning sickness and it isn't going to teach you the secret to triple your income before the baby is born. However, it might lighten what can be a time of emotional highs and lows, filled with fear, ecstasy, anxiety and elation, often all at the same time.
Seriously, there are plenty of good books out there which give great suggestions for how to handle the upcoming changes in your lives. Check out "The Expectant Father" or books of that ilk ... but to loosen up...
make sure you know what you want from the book
I gave this book 2 stars because, although it was not for me, I am willing to accpet some people may like it. I am excited, scared and very curious about my wife's pregnancy. I have never seen her look prettier and happier. I bought the book thinking it might give me the "inside story" to the secrets and mysteries of the mother of my child. I wanted to know what I could do to make these 9 months the best experience for her. What I got was a --humorous?-- vision of the torture it is for a man to have a pregnant wife. It was no help at all; it was offensive and embarassing.
My wife, however, thought it was funny. She has an amazing sense of humor, I guess. She gave it to our neighbors, who are also expecting their first child, and they loved it. Like they love Dave Barry and The Far Side books.
I guess what I'm saying is: if you want to laugh like you would watching Seinfeld, then sure. This is it. If you want to understand your wife better, or find out how to make...
A very, very funny book
Brilliantly done comic relief for the overstressed expectant father who is a little burned out on pregnancy info. Each month of pregnancy has its own chapter, and each chapter begins with "what she'll be complaining about this month". The book probably doesn't have tons of useful info, and shouldn't be approached that way, but it is very funny and does serve to get you into the right mindset. If you're a newly-pregnant woman, and your partner is resisting the harder reading, start him off with this one. THEN give him the hard stuff...

Review :
Not too sure about this one....
To be fair I have not finished it and will complete my review when I do. But it has quite a bit of I suppose "harsh truths" or fear based information at the beginning. I get the feeling if you are overweight or obese you have no chance of having a healthy/ normal child according to this woman. Or you do have a chance but it has a doom and gloom approach and the author even uses those words. I will give it a chance but it reminds me of What to Expect When you're expecting a bit...too fear based. I am interested in the recipes and again will update my review upon completion but I suggest sending a sample to your kindle to get a feel for it before purchase.

A must read for all women!
Dr. Avena does a wonderful job providing a simple guide for pregnant women on what to eat and why. There are not many books out there that explain WHY it's so important to eat certain foods at each stage of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy is a very exciting and traumatic experience and I think every woman wants to do the very best for themselves and their children during this time. The insight that Dr. Avena provides can make us better-informed patients and moms. There are many recipes within the book that I'm looking forward to trying. So far, I made the cereal bar recipe with my two older children and it was a hit!

Avena strikes a perfect balance between science and empathy
Dr. Avena strikes a perfect balance between science and empathy. As a mother herself, she understands the struggles women face during pregnancy and addresses them from 2 angles - her heart and her mind. That allows the reader to feel as though they are getting a personalized guide during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. I especially appreciated the simple yet creative recipes which I will use beyond pregnancy! I only wish she could write me a "guide" on What to Eat for the rest of my life....

Review :
Accept Your Fate and Thrive
Most of us like to think that we are good people. We go to work, pay our taxes, and love our families. But, doing admirable things does not necessarily mean that we are immune to bad things. From a Judeo-Christian perspective, this can be a hard pill to swallow. We want to believe that there’s a reason for everything and that God has our best interests at heart. If you have experienced a tragedy in your life, you have probably wracked your brain trying to come up with a reason. Instead of doing that, I would recommend reading When Bad Things Happen to Good People. This book was a lifesaver for me and many other people I know. It posits that there are certain events in a person’s life that are random and devoid of any divine meaning. Rabbi Harold Kushner is a true wordsmith and each sentence gradually helps in the healing process.

Another book that I like to keep by my side at all times is 21...
A Classic of profound knowledge...
When I faced incredible loss a few years ago, I was amazed at the insensitive words my so-called friends offered in their "compassion", words that cut me right to the bone of my soul. It seemed that my grief was a burden for many. I painfully watched many of my closest friends distance themselves from me and even resent me for the tragedy and emotion that I had no control over. I questioned my feelings, my thoughts, and even my faith.
This book is a comfort for all people who have been forced to swallow such stupid sentiments in their times of grief and loss. It is an exploration of how we comfort each other in such terrifying times, and the dumb mistakes we make. Most of these sentiments wax on about God, why He created a world in which such pain exists: Is this all part of a greater good, a higher order? Is God testing you, expanding your soul for your own good? Has He taken your loved ones to a better place? This book gets right to the heart of the matter, that people...
A wonderfully-written perspective on God, life and suffering
In a time when so many people are striving for an explanation of why their lives turn out a certain way, or why things (good or bad) happen to them, the expressions "it's all part of God's plan," "everything happens for the best," or "it just wasn't meant to be," and so on, have became a little tiresome. In "When Bad Things Happen to Good People," Rabbi Harold S. Kushner offers a refreshing point of view that differs from those who think everything occurs on earth because God wants it that way, and at the same time provides a surprising comfort in the fact that events actually can, and do, take place for no reason at all.
I read the original version of this book in the early 80's (several times since), and what struck me was that Rabbi Kushner was able to reconcile a common Judeo-Christian view of God and causality with a perspective of life that holds a place for randomness and happenstance. Yes! Things happen in life that...

Announcing a brand new, cover-to-cover revision of America's pregnancy bible. What to Expect When You're Expecting is a perennial New York Times bestseller and one of USA Today's 25 most influential books of the past 25 years. It's read by more than 90% of pregnant women who read a pregnancy book--the most iconic, must-have book for parents-to-be, with over 14.5 million copies in print.

Now comes the Fourth Edition, a new book for a new generation of expectant moms--featuring a new look, a fresh perspective, and a friendlier-than-ever voice. Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section of the book, answering dozens of new questions and including loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, the Fourth Edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses the most current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk food–dependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be.

Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect from What to Expect... only better.

Review :

The forward is written by an esteemed OB/GYN, and I can see why he endorses the book, which I...
so condescending!
This book assumes that pregnant women are idiots, and talks to them accordingly. It's full of cutsey language, puns, and linguistic tics that drove this English major up a wall. In terms of content, it contributes to our culture's position of "better safe than sorry" when it comes to kids - kids and pregnant women must be protected from anything and everything that might be the slightest bit upsetting. It does not provide any information on the research behind their advice, assuming that the pregnant woman is too stupid or lacking in self-control to make an informed decision for herself upon being presented with the facts, relying instead on making across the board recommendations on all kinds of things for which there is no scientific basis. I also hated that the miscarriage section had a big disclaimer warning pregnant women not to read it unless they actually had had a miscarriage, because the knowledge alone that miscarriage could happen would be so emotionally devastating to...
Why is this book so popular?
I am now 7 months pregnant and have FINALLY come to the conclusion that this book is unhealthy for me to read and I can toss it. The writing is vapid and uninspiring. The tone is condescending. The information is watery and half-assed. Worst of all it makes me feel like a failure for not stocking my freezer full of fruit-juice sweetened bran muffins. The only genius in this book is it's ability to make a pregnant woman feel guilty for not knitting tiny sweaters in her spare time. I would give my copy to our local thrift store but I don't want to subject another woman to it's unique form of torture.
