A High Price To Pay For Money

In her tenth novel, Victoria Christopher Murray has penned an emotionally gripping story that has brought to life a cast of characters caught up in a tragedy as timeless and evocative as those of the Ancient Greeks or Shakespeare. Evia and Adam were a couple living the American Dream, until Adam lost his high paying corporate job. Now they find themselves living the American nightmare. There's more month than money and financial ruin is imminent, but there's a life raft - an offer of $5 Million Dollars if they'll.... They take the deal, but then their lives spin out of control. Murray convinces readers with a conviction of a skilled writer that you cannot, should not dance with the devil. I thought about this story long after I closed the book.

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight...you shouldn't

Adam and Evia Langston are experiencing financial lows because of unemployment, greed, and lust. Evia's supervisor Shay offers her a silly million dollar deal. Evia and Adam accept the deal and pay, royally. This is an average novel - starts slow and heats up towards the end. It is not christian fiction. The way Evia and Adam are described when they have sex should have been omitted. It is lengthy and sometimes boring.
It's not the typical Victoria Murray Book. Not enough suspense and too much whining. I understand it is fiction but life imitates art. This book was imaginative like a cartoon. I give it an OKAY rating because the message I got from it ---if you dance with the devil, you should expect to get burnt. To me, this is a positive message that is very useful.

strong inspirational family drama
As she nears her fiftieth birthday, wealthy Shay-Shaunte knows what she wants as her special present. Until Shay-Shaunte offers one of her executive assistant, Evia Langston five million dollars for a weekend with the latter's husband Adam. Stunned Evia says no thanks.

Housing prices had been pumped up by crazy new kinds of loans, and foreclosures of homes and farms were surging as borrowers faltered under the payments. Employed people were stumbling under long work hours. She advocated the creation of a 40-hour workweek and a minimum wage. Companies were hiring teenagers instead of adults to save money, and she thought the time was ripe to place new restrictions on child labor.

“Nothing like this has ever been done in the United States before,” she told him. “You know that, don’t you?”

Within weeks she would head to Washington, D.C. by his side. The challenges they would face would be great. The conservative Supreme Court, businessmen, free-market ideologues and even some labor leaders would oppose them. They would try to block her work. They would argue that the poor should be left to fend for themselves. They would savage Frances’s reputation, they would eventually try to impeach her.

But she would not give up.

In this age when Presidential cabinet members come and go almost with the frequency of auto salesmen, several generations of politics watchers have grown up pretty much ignorant of the name Frances Perkins.

Her time in the national spotlight was brief --- the 12 years of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency. As FDR's Secretary of Labor she was especially prominent during the years 1933-1940, when domestic concerns were on the front burner and she played a leading role in pushing for such causes as the Social Security Act, wage and hour laws, immigration reform, workplace safety, the right of workers to organize, pensions, welfare and old-age insurance. When World War II erupted, she was less often in the news but still active in matters like pushing for admission of Jewish refugees into the U.S. As the first woman ever to serve in a President's cabinet, she was subject to blatant sexist attitudes and scurrilous rumors not only from know-nothing outsiders but also from her own...
A fascinating, wonderful book about an important woman...
As an American History teacher high school teacher, all my texts include a sidebar, or mention of sorts, about Frances Perkins. This book exceeded all my expectations, and I found myself breathless (?) as I raced to read more! In fact, I almost had a sick feeling of what would have happened if I hadn't read this book, a kind of "near miss," for it is that good. For a history teacher of 20+ years, I count it in my top 5 books or educating me about a person's impact on history. Even after reading it, I went back and learned about how Downey sleuthed to find all the details about Perkins--a feat that allows us to understand an appreciate her subject's life.

The pivotal role of Perkins' accomplishments begins with her ties to the suffrage movement and crusade for better labor laws--as she herself said--"I'd rather have laws than a union." It highlights her close relationship with Florence Kelley, but also the New York of Tamany Hall, and the ins and outs of Albany politics...
I'm glad someone wrote this book
This book should have been written years ago. Really. Being Sec. of Labor for 13 years is a big deal and should be considered one. Unfortunately, Perkins is the butt of too many jokes in DC "in labor for 12 years and gave birth to nothing!" and that god-awful ugly building over 395.

It's great to think that we once had someone better versed in social work than a lawyer as Sec. of Labor. Washington had a heart back then.

The thing that bothered me about this book is that the author seems to have completely bought into the rivalry - albeit, one-sided - between Perkins and Eleanor Roosevelt. I don't think Eleanor was aware of it. And I don't think it was a rivalry until later in life. There was then and is now, room for two prominent women, not just one. I don't think a comparison between a bureaucrat and a First Lady is an apt one. It's as if Eleanor Roosevelt is a dragon this author must slay to reveal Perkins' contribution. In DC after trying but failing for years to have kids, late thirties couple Rachel and Thomas Dawson are euphoric when he donated sperm to a surrogate mom and eventually brought home their twins. It cost them $100,000 collected by Baron Bell but they felt it was worth every penny as did their parents whom lent them some of the cash. However, not long afterward a lawyer informed the couple that his client the surrogate mom wants her kids. They lost their children, are broken and Bell vanished.

Rachel visits lawyer Lizzie Fox though she cannot afford the fee. The attorney contacts the vigilante Sisterhood who learning of the baby-selling ring scheme and come to Washington to bring rightness to the madness even as a snowstorm hits the city.

Long time die hardest fans will fully relish the latest escapades as the crew still wait several books for their pardons, but keep doing good deeds; newcomers will find it difficult to grasp how the Sisterhood got to this...
Great Subject, Poor Book

DEADLY DEALS by Fern Michaels is a staggering disappointment. The subject is fascinating and timely, but the story is flat and dull. It maybe that Ms. Michaels has incorporated too many characters into the stories and needs to give each of them a show page, but it doesn't work.
For the next one I hope she gives a few a vacation -- a long one. The dialogue between Harry and Jack is so repetitive it reads like a record needle stuck in a grove.

The idea of mates was belittled a lot.
I’m a giant fan of the 'Purgatory' series by Cynthia Eden, in fact, it’s probably my favorite series of hers. ‘Deal With The Devil’ is the fourth book in the series but each can be read as a standalone. Overall I’ve enjoyed them all. The first, ‘The Wolf Within’, was an okay read and opened up the series (this book is free), the two that followed, ‘Marked by the Vampire’ and ‘Charming the Beast’, stole my heart. I loved every part of them. As per this one, I’m not sure where I stand, I didn’t dislike it but I also didn’t love it.

Eric Pate is the director of the PARA unit, he makes all the rules and everyone follows his orders. He doesn’t let anyone too close because he hides who he really is: something that isn’t so human after all. Then Ella Lancaster crashes into his world and Eric’s legendary control starts to crack.

'Deal with the Devil’ opens up with...
Lots of Action and Scorching Hot Scenes
One of my Dirty Girls is a huge Cynthia Eden fan so when an ARC came up, I decided to give it a try. I was a bit worried about not having read the first three books in the Purgatory Series, but I caught on just fine.

I loved Ella and as her story unfolded it just tugged at my heart strings. I am a huge fan of strong heroines and alpha heroes. Ella definitely fit in the tough as nails category but I wish we had gotten to see more of her kicking rearend and taking names and less of Ella getting beaten up, grabbed, kidnapped etc etc.

Eric on the other hand didn't even make it to my like category for a good part of the story. His cause was definitely worthy, but his win at all costs attitude was kind of off-putting. He eventually grew on me and I ended up liking him overall but he's not going to make my favorite book boyfriend list.

There was plenty of action and some scorching hot scenes that made this book worthy of my time. I still really liked the...

A very brief and concise view of venture capital structures, but also somewhat basic in content. Examples could use more details (e.g., the sample weighted average anti-dilution calculations).
Disappointed that the author does not address more complicated security structures other than common and straight convertible preferred. Also, I was surprised given the recent publication date that there was not a comparison on how deal terms have changed from the dot-com boom and bust.
Certainly not a must have book for my bookshelf.
Sahlman's Entrepreneurial Venture is a much better "reference" book and cheaper too.

Very Disappointed

After enjoying his first book, Term Sheets and Valuations, I was looking forward to this one. I regret to say that I found it a big waste of time and a bigger waste of money.

It appears as if the marketing of the book by the pblisher sought to take advantage of his first book by raising the price by 500%, giving the impression that this book was better or more comprehensive. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Direct to the Deal Terms
This book has a few sample drafts of term sheets and other legal documents. That is not the primary focus of this book. You can hire that kind of talent (legal drafting) on a per hour basis. This book helps the owners make the BUSINESS decisions necessary to avoid hamstring their new venture during this difficult passage. Included is information about what to pay your independent directors, advisory board members and senior management. Also included is what percentage of the company the founders should expect to keep, how to avoid excessive dilution during an unfortunate down round and how to present your opportunity to potential investors. All of these BUSINESS decisions are beyond the discretion of attorneys in this area, they typically instruct the entrepreneur to reflect upon the topic and then the attorney will draft it to suit.

Trump: The Art of the Deal is painfully vain at times, but it's a decent book. I had a hard time getting into this book at first, but the this book gets better the more you read it. The chapter I liked best was the chapter about the USFL and Mr. Trump's purchase of the Generals and his experiences as a USFL owner. This book could be described as Donald Trump's personal and business autobiography co-authored with Tony Schwartz. .It's not a perfect book, but Donald Trump is a solid figure in America's business world and business history, which comes across crystal clear.

Until this course, I generally shunned studying the topic of negotiation, assuming it was mainly about crass ways to manipulate people in order to get what you want. But we all routinely need to negotiate things big and small, and I generally trust the quality of courses from The Teaching Company, so I figured I'd try to be open minded and give this course a try.

I'm very glad I did! Having taught negotiation for a couple of decades, and gained plenty of firsthand negotiation experience himself, Seth Freeman does a great job. He gives us both academic rigor and practical methods, illustrates points with many examples, and is a very clear and engaging communicator. A great mystery with interesting characters

Jack Stratton is a cop. We first meet him on a night shift where he single-handedly 'calms down' three drunken lumberjacks who were causing trouble in a bar. After a stressful night he returns to his apartment only to find a naked girl in the shower and a very pissed off girlfriend. The naked girl turns out to be his foster sister whom he hadn't seen for many years. She tells him that his best friend's sister has disappeared and he's the only person who can help find her.

That's how the story begins and it only gets better from there.

This was a great book. A mystery that gets more and more complicated, interesting characters and great humor. I found myself laughing out loud quite a lot and I rarely do that when reading a book. I think that humor helped balance out the darker parts of the story which made the book even better.

I'm looking forward to other mysteries that Jack and Replacement solve together.

A well written thrilling mystery

Girl Jaked got me hooked for the next book. It is not only a thrilling mystery; it is a character study of two lovable - in spite of their hang-ups - people. the characters are all well developed and the descriptions are written works of art. I was impressed with the respectful approach to God, even though the hero isn't a Christian. The last traumatic scene was very impressive too.

Although long winded and repetitive, there is useful information in this book. However, the appendix has all the dosage info for supplements and is totally illegible on the kindle. Get the book.

Narcissism at its finest...

I couldn't even finish this book. And I had to unsubscribe from Sara Gottfried's newsletter. She's a doctor trying to be a celebrity and it's just awful. I believe that her want to market herself is much greater than her want to advance women's health.

What astounds me is that this book isn't even that helpful -- the suggestions are quite basic -- but she's dubbed them "The Gottfried Protocol." Please. Sara, you haven't brought anything new to light, you've just repackaged some common sense and previously-researched information and marketed them as your "protocol." The book was so wrought with arrogance and self-aggrandizing blabber, it was insulting.

Ok as we age, things change and yes I know that's normal - but sometimes it's hard to accept. After the birth of my 3rd kid, I could never really lose the "baby weight." Beautifully Erotic and Infomative
Perhaps the book is 4-stars, not 5. My review is designed to dilute the previous one-star condemnation. I'm totally baffled as to what is "pornish" and "juvenile" about this book. (Read my comments on her review.)

To be honest, I'm an interested novice on the subject of Kama Sutra, and probably don't know a 4-star from a 5-star read. I hoped to upload photos from the book for you to make your own decisions, but they are "nude" and forbidden to upload.

The photos are beautifully erotic, full color, lots of light and shadow, upscale, minimally explicit: yes, breasts; yes, some pubic hair; yes -- couples enjoying intercourse. The book is about sex, after all.

Unlike some sex books with illustrations, the photos are clear in "what to do" with one's body, to achieve the pose. Each pose is rated with a degree of difficulty, and type: example "soft, gentle" vs. "deep, intense, hot".

The BEST Sex Book I've Ever Read. The BEST Life Book I've Ever Read.
Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.

If you read only one book on human sexuality, make it Come as You Are. This isn't your standard sex book. There are no promises here that learning one trick will drive you or your lover wild. But there is a lot of science, presented in an approachable manner, that provides great insight into how people work sexually (and, to be honest, in general as well). The book's stated audience is women, but I think anyone can benefit from the science that Nagoski covers in her book, regardless of sex. Sure, if you are a guy you'll read some things that don't directly apply to you, but I recommend you read this book anyway. It is that important.

This is an astonishingly good book - written with warmth, wisdom, humor, and heart. Although it's designed to be a self-help book for the general public, I have a suspicion its greater value will be in the fresh and original ideas it will offer to sex therapists. I look forward to using some of Nagoski's assessment, education, and treatment techniques in my own sex therapy practice. The book is also a cornucopia of clinically relevant behavioral science research. I believe many sex clinicians will find themselves returning to it again and again for inspiration and guidance. Great information, too much self promotion
I think Woman Code is a fantastic book for all women to read, especially those in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Vitti does a great job of explaining how our bodies are supposed to function, the interplay between hormones and her message is extremely empowering. The idea that our hormone function is basically a system and we can knock over the dominoes, but we can also get it realigned and back into balance. Hormones have always been this black box and something that people feel are a puzzle and untouchable, but Woman Code gives you the tools to unlock it and figure it out. I also love the "every meal, every day" concept. It's a life-long effort and it takes real attention and work to make it happen, but it is possible. There just aren't any quick fixes. All good stuff! The reason I don't give this book 5 starts (and I wavered between 3 or 4) is because some of it reads like a blog post/promotional material. TOO much promotion but definitely some good information
There are some good points in the book and it is definitely worth a read for every woman. However i have to agree with other reviews that there is far too much promotion. It would be fine if it were just a paragraph at the end of the book, so that people have the option to take things further and pay for this if they so wish. But unfortunately it gets pretty irritating as there's probably a whole page dedicated to this in each chapter if not more.

I would've liked a bit more detail into the nutritional areas. It's great to have a chart of which foods will be helpful for different parts of your cycle, however it would have been interesting to see specifically why these foods are good.

It may just be me with my interest in nutrition, and maybe this would be too much info for some, maybe a little overwhelming. However in my experience if you understand the details of how food works and why it is good for you, you're much more likely to stick to eating it and enjoy...

I'm embarrassed to say, as an educated woman who is health and fitness savvy, I really didn't understand much about the endocrine system, how it works, nor the impact that nutrition has on its various processes. When you come late to the party, writing the 160th review, you have a certain freedom to write something as much for your own use as for other readers, confident that the review will be at the bottom of the pile.

Kahneman's thesis is that the human animal is systematically illogical. Not only do we mis-assess situations, but we do so following fairly predictable patterns. Moreover, those patterns are grounded in our primate ancestry.

The first observation, giving the title to the book, is that eons of natural selection gave us the ability to make a fast reaction to a novel situation. Survival depended on it. So, if we hear an unnatural noise in the bushes, our tendency is to run. Thinking slow, applying human logic, we might reflect that it is probably Johnny coming back from the Girl Scout camp across the river bringing cookies, and that running might not be the best idea. However, fast thinking is hardwired.

The kindle version of this excellent book is disappointing. Several features of the book are confusing in the ebook because the formatting is so poor. Tables with two columns run together because they are not boxed and the columns are only separated by one space. There are questions at the end of each chapter whose purpose is unclear until you see them in the real book, where they are set off in a box with a different type face. Most disappointing is the handling of the footnotes - they are relegated to the back of the book with no page number reference. There is few word phrase in the notes that corresponds to the place in the text to which the note refers, but it is up to the reader to scan the chapter to find the reference. The book reads like a mechanical translation of the physical book into a new format, with no effort taken to edit and format appropriately. So the reader loses. With the price of the ebook almost as much as the real book, you will be happier if you buy the real...

Back in 1994, Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini, Director of the Institute of San Raffaele in Milan, Italy, wrote a charming little book about common cognitive distortions called Inevitable Illusions. Edit (4/28): I would like to address the "basic recipes" complaints. I've cooked my whole life and even won cooking contests. Over the weekend I followed the recipes for four "basic" items: perfect poached eggs, perfect burgers, perfect seared chicken breast, and perfect whole roasted chicken. All four turned out great! The burgers were way better than my usual ones, and the seared chicken breast was ridiculously delicious...so good that I'll cook it weekly! Looking forward to cooking my way through the rest of the book.

Among the many lovely items I received from my Queen on Valentine's Day was this: "The Guide To Getting It On!" by Paul Joannides, published in 2000 by Goofy Foot Press. This is a huge 698-page oversized paperback book that covers just about every sex topic you can think of, with an especial emphasis on every aspect of The Deed itself. It's delightfully light-hearted and yet it's amazingly informative, discussing all sorts of topics in a frank, playful style that makes it a delight to read. Sample chapters in the book include:

When it comes to sex guides, there is no shortage. Many are written just to titillate the reader. Many are a guidebook to kink and assume that the reader already knows the basics for more straightforward sexual fun. Some ridiculously romanticize while others read like a medical school text.
Paul Joannides' "The Guide to Getting It On!" is the ideal sex guide. It deals with the basics as well as the more adventuresome stuff. It presents health issues with honest clarity, but is never frightening or clinical. It is a thick tome, but a remarkably fast read. Joannides is thorough, yet concise.
This is the best book on the market dealing with this subject matter. The advice for how to bring up children with healthy, age appropriate views about sex is invaluable. The only problem I have with this book is that I wish I'd written it myself.

This book gives you a description of about 32 different strengths that people have, and at its core is an access code to an online Myers Briggs type assessment you can take to identify your strengths.

The book is merely a reference for the strengths that an online assessment helps you identify, along with strengths that others may have and how you might identify these in people to work better in teams together. The strengths identification is worthwhile, but only if you buy the print version (otherwise you don't get a code and can't take the test!)

The book is a quick read and very helpful in getting one to think about one's strengths and the potential complementary strengths to look for in others to offset one's weaker areas, if you work in a team environment. However, once I completed the online test and obtained the resultant reports, I was shocked to learn that I would only get the Top 5 Themes, and the other 29 remain a mystery. Upon contacting the company, I learned that for an additional $550.00 I could then obtain the other 29 themes, as well as their order of ranking. It is obvious to me that this book is being used as a sales "hook" to try to get you to spend more money with the company and may also be being used as a "beachhead" sales device to penetrate into potential corporate accounts.
